There is an article about how the Greasemonkey Twitter adder works at Income Diary. The script basically auto adds a particular user's followers, up to 1000 with a 2 second break. In order to keep from being banned, I would say just use it for a few minutes, maybe no more than 200 people at a time per day. After a day or two, unfollow anyone who hasn't followed you back and start the process again. You should never have a lot more people that you are following vs. that are following you.

As far as the twitter as a marketing tool is concerned I think it is very ineffective. You can keep adding people to it and follow people and have them follow you. But is it for real ?

Here's a little trick, add the followers yourself but this programme will allow you to defollow all who dont follow you for free...

You can also pay for it to become automated but as your looking for free then use the method I suggested.

i suggest the manual friend adding method, you may get suspended when you use bot method to increase followers, i had experience with 3 profiles.

to send scheduled automated tweets u can use autotweeter
search in google for "autotweeter"

and to mass follow people randomly use twitterautofollower which is available
as a link from autotweeter's website itself

i've found good tools here, but i guess you should do it yourself, because i read recently that twitter is fixing people who are trying black hat tricks to add followers
