FML and MLIA are the same - just silly or funny stories people are bound to link to/copy.

Viral Marketin; word of mouth. A lot of companies/websites are based entirely on this concept. It's a catch 22, in order for the site to become popular it needs a lot of people. But alot of people dont go to it, unless its popular.

Most of that would be word of mouth, since most of the targeted visitors for those sites are kids under the age of 21. It's good to know where your target market "lurks" on the internet, and then post up links on those places where those people go. You'll get a lot more targeted traffic this way, and you'll also have a very high chance of repeat visitors.

Its the quality of content - people reading microblogging stuff there is interest to read what other people's life experiences are, but not so much more than say 400 characters at a time.

    Yes,

its viral marketing. Mouth to mouth publicity is much powerful than any other d campaigns. That 's why they grew higher per day. I think they have stuff with their sites.

Mike, although word of mouth of course helped a little, they, he, built his traffic up that much that fast from advertising, buying traffic.

That's the only way to do it.

The real questions are: Where did he advertise and how much did he spend? :D

I think *most* of it must have been from viral marketing and word of mouth, I really doubt they were buying traffic from adwords or anything like that.

    Guess again.

He has close to or over one million monthly hits and he has been operating for less than two years.

Word of mouth takes time to get to that level and that fast.

Yup, to the more experienced, we know that he did and probably still is doing advertising, buying traffic.

    It's pretty obvious.

I love how people say things without doing research first.

    Got a question for ya:

There are, God knows how many sites out there that have really good info in it, you seen their url's, along with them having a lot of backlinks, and whatnot, yet why is it they have, as an example, maybe a thousand visitors a day?

Mike, if you want to be as successful as that site owner and that quickly, get crackin' on studying advertising.

Even Markus Frind, of PlentyOfFish still advertises, buys traffic to help keep his numbers up.

There is no secret to why a site is as big as it is.

"Guys"??? Everybody here, who are all inexperienced, and who probably have dead sites are saying viral, word of mouth, so....

Then again, without even thinking, most post just to post, to be part of a thread.

I can tell you, but it would be one hell of a long-ass post.

I would suggest to start reading books on the subject. Go to Amazon to pick out the most popular books.

It's much more to it than that, but it's a start.

The bottom line is placing well thought-out ads in other webmasters' sites, like the owner of fmylife has done. Also, possibly advertising offline too. But the ones I know of haven't advertised offline.

Sorry to be so short here, but...

Well it didn't blow up "the day it came out" - also they got a lot of good press and PR, through CNN, other news networks, online publications, etc. Then word of mouth from there.

I think big media coverage is like gold. Even if it's bad news.

The popularity of these sites has alot to do with social marketing on facebook and twitter and the like. Sites like www.hangoverblog.com cought on purely from those communities.
