what EXACTLY is a backlink?

im sorry if this is a newbie question, but i really dont know exactly what it is..and how do you optimize them?

 

a backlink is a link on a website other than yours that points back to your website. you optimize them by using keywords that you want your site to rank for.

 

Also make you you have good quality back links like
1. High PR of Back link
2. Good content from linking page
3. Not more than 30 links on the linking page
4. the page of back link should have been crawled recently
5. The page of back link should also belong to your category of business/products/service
