.org OR .com for Veteran's site?

Created a landing page to assist Veterans in getting benefits from the VA ... just wondering if I should use a .com OR .org ...

would one help legitimize my site more?
    drive more traffic?

I personally think .org would sound more appropriate. I think you're onto something there.

    +1 vote for .org

Unless you are planning to put a bunch of ads/affiliate links onto the site .org looks better for non-profit sites that are trying to help people, whereas .com's are more associated with for-profit stuff.

I'd buy both and use the .org and point the other to it

It doesn't really matter, boatboy. What matters is how you direct people there, and how the site looks. Domain extensions don't make a bit of difference.

Good luck with it. ... It sounds like a good one.

How many Veterans or ordinary people alike ever think of .org? Seriously ask 10 of them to name any website and see if .org ever comes up.

*shrugs shoulders* Plenty. And of the few who don't, so what? Just like on any other subject, they are directed there anyway, mostly through advertising, so...

Just a couple that has come to mind, which many, upon many that has a lot of traffic...

    http://www.welcomebackveterans.org/

    http://www.dav.org/

But, hell, it really doesn't matter which extension is used. It's the site itself that matters.

Many of the .com's are taken, so the veterans and family members go for the org, and any other extension that may not be taken. They later find out that extensions do not matter.

But maybe boatboy thinks different. *shrugs shoulers* I don't know.

I'd say go for .com. Regardless of the fact that many have suggested .org, what i perceive is
1)The domain extension is never considered seriously unless your targeting traffic of a particular country.
    2) .com is always better than .org in terms of value and it supposedly even has a higher priority in search engines.

    Really?

I wonder what all of the webmasters, who many are also veterans, and they have a HELL of a lot of traffic would say to that.

I wonder what any webmaster on any subject who has a lot of traffic and they do just fine would say to that.

And Google's computers were not programmed to favor one extension over another. It goes by the popularity (backlinks) of a site.
