Does Google Ignore Spam Links?

Discussion in 'Google' started by Miguel82, Nov 17, 2009.

I operate a successful website which appears to have been caught up in 100's of spam link directories. I am careful to ensure the site in question is only ever listed on relevant sites and I fear these linking to mine may have a damaging effect on the rankings in Google.

Is there anyway to alert Google of this to get them to disregard these links?

No there is nothing you can do. Just make sure you do not link back to these directories and avoid future submission to these type of directories.

    I wouldnt worry about that..

If that where the case then your competitors could just start submitting to any spammy site..
(if the site isnt relevant or even close and looks spammy then im sure its not counted)

Google always wants to avoid spams. But spammars now-a-days smarter than google. But once they should be caught.

    Precisely!

What Google seems to do is simply ignore the spam-links, i.e. not count them toward your SERPs or pagerank but they won't penalize you as otherwise I would get all my competitors off Google's rankings in a day, spamming their links all over the net.

yeah they won't really affect you unless you gain a TON of them in a short period of time, like by using xrumer or something. They also ad pretty much nothing to your site in terms of backlink juice.

Has anyone ever tried to see what would happen by spamming their competitor's links all over? Everyone always says, "Google won't allow it" but I've yet to see anyone try.

Mass spam links can hurt you. Google's algo changes all the time, but right now I think it's very possible that spam links are not ignored, but they get your site penalized.
