Ok guys you probably thought that I was talking about identity revealing to some site.... its not about this at all.

I am talking about how to conduct business - like some guys of a big companies have a personal pages on facebook + twitter

(name + lastname + ceo owner of www.site.com)

If everything goes smoothly in your life and career its not a problem at all. But you realize that its not always gonna be that way.

You will be making mistakes and bad desicions in life. And then those bad desicions can lead to bad publicity and since your name is known it will be hard to do other projects.

Like I said some guys believe that when you reveal your identity like that it can build your social business circle and business partners faster but also there is another side - its easier for your competitors to do competitive research on you and they can use that information against you and your business. Dig deeper if there were previous cases when other customers had bad experience with you and many other things.

Thats why I am asking this question. Because im not sure yet how should I approach it.

    that's the main problem, :)

if you want to start faster, don't hide your identity.

hiding your identity is good if you're a "standalone" type.

I think, it's back to your personality, ;)

Depends on situation. Sometimes it is better if you conceal your online identity in order to avoid competitors from finding out all your sites.

It's pretty much impossible to hide your identity online. Whether intentional or not, everybody leaves a paper trail that can be traced by the right people.

Some of us don't care and don't hide behind fake names, whois records, and so on.

Does it really matter? Probably not. If somebody really wants your personal information they'll find a way to get it.

What I've done is I've separated my online businesses into two distinct categories:

    Hidden businesses
Most of my websites fall into this category. It's almost impossible to find out my true identity based on any one of my sites. I do this mainly because of competitors - I use rather aggressive marketing tactics and whether you want it or not - if you're successful you WILL have people who dream of 'getting back at you'. For this very reason I make it very hard, if not impossible, to find out my identity and even which other sites I own.

    Transparent businesses
This category consists mainly of forums and very few of my websites and I use this model for the purpose of the infoproducts that I'm selling. Contrary to the majority of producers, I always want my products to be the absolute top-notch and I also want my customers to sort of 'get to know me' - believe it or not, some of the best JV partners I'm currently very closely partnering with I've met simply through the fact that they've, at one point, bought one of my e-books! If I would hide my identity doing this, it would've never happened and I'm sure I wouldn't be as trustworthy either and therefore would sell a lot less.

I have kind of a similar question.

I have an idea for a premium online business, and of course I will reveal my identity here.
I also have a number of ideas for e-books and other stuff I want to sell online, but I'm afraid these will hurt my credibility for the premium business.

What is the way to go here, use an alternative for the ebooks and stuff? Or use my real identity on every site? And how to handle the loss of credibility for the premium business?

You can always create a "pen name" for your ebook businesses. However, I wouldn't worry about the ebook sales hurting your credibility - unless you plan to sell cr*p. Since my products have always been top-notch and not more than 1 customer out of every 100 is unhappy for some reason, I don't see any point hiding my identity when promoting my products.

I try to stay anonymous as much as possible, but it's not a big deal if someone knows my real name and contact info. I'm just very careful about what info I give out.

My point of view is why hide your identity if you don't have anything to hide?

Well it's not that I'm not proud of the e-books, but I'm afraid it will hurt my main income stream.

Anyone that has experience with this?

It depends that on which platform you are doing business, some aspects of business reuqire a complete secret identity
but you gotta have some sense too. i have had my bad experiences online but with the passage of time, things have now headed in a good direction
the best way of dealing with such issue(s), is to learn from other people's experience

Well if you are doing some business do you hide the business scheme and the way you work or not?

There always will be competitors and the bad guys who want to find out who you are what you are doing and such.

So if you are making all this information available you can have a lot of obstacles in your way.

In other words im torn apart how should i conduct my business. Because it has 2 sides.

If you hide your identity you will not build your social/business circle quickly enough.

If you reveal your identity you creating a lot of obstacles for yourself because of competitors. - they can track what you are doing, where you are doing that and how. And can copy cat your methods and also they will find some bad things which happended earlier.

For instance imagine we know your identity and who you are and you are trying to promote some thing. And previously you launched some product and it failed.

So you are promoting that product and I am your competitor.

And i write to everybody in the forum.. "Wait is this the guy who released the product x? Take a look what a fail was it..

    www.examplesite.com/forum

Not sure about this product but I would run for the hills from this guy."

And boom your credibility is gone.

The way things work in our age is publicity always trying to find some bad things instead of good things.

Thats why I made this thread in the 1st place.

I usually go by my handles online, though if I'm on ebay, then I always sign my mail's to ebay users with my first name. I've always gone by my handle, and practically the majority of dealings I make go on with people who also go by handles.

Can't see any harm to give out fake name and such. If they don't know about, the wont suffer from it.
A name isn't really important, both online and in real life.

Identity theft. I don't want someone being able to track me down via my online presence.
