Just curious, are there any search engines out there that are getting close to google in terms of size and popularity?

I'm sure one day Google will be dethroned, but it might be a long time before that happens.

In terms of size and popularity? Google is the #1 site in the entire world. There is no site, search engine or not, that has a bigger audience.

A more interesting question would be which new/old search engine will be the first to beat the quality of googles SERPs.

None are that close, but it all depends on what the general public will move towards more in the future.

Google's approach is minimalism and simplicity, which is basically the complete opposite of Bing. If the public decides that simple is best then I am sure they will stick with Google for a long time.

Only if the world is what you see from your window. :)

Do not forget there are many of countries, where Google is not so popular.
China - Baidu, Russia - Yandex, Czech Republic - Seznam, etc.

Google fans take into the consideration the fact, that last year the number of internet users in China became bigger than entire US population.

No one has gotten anywhere near to Google in popularity. A big rival would do Google some good though. Imagine how fast Google would innovate if someone got them running scared.

Yahoo and Bing still at distant second and third unless maybe they combine together to hold more market share.
