There is a market for some forms of online local advertising in my country -but not just another business directory -so I have been looking at some examples that are impressive as far as what they offer

    http://www.blackburnontheweb.co.uk/

I have thought of this with a social network for a specific town/region

How can this be scaled up for more than one town

1.A separate domain for each town

2.one domain and have different sections for each town

    how would you approach it?

It really depends on how many towns you are talking about. It might be best to create a website and then use subdomains for each city.

I would use just one site, by doing so it will be alot easier to point links to those inner pages. Plus it be would alot easier to manage instead of going back and forth to a bunch of websites. Also, one site would keep down the amount of reciprocal linking which you will most likely get from having a bunch of websites.

i also like the one site idea.

a great starting point is to start one for your own town. see how it does, then expand it.

Thanks for the comments guys.I wanted to add a social network to the directory.I got a good response from the research I did and already have one sponsor for set up costs.thats only for one city.If I only set up one website and create separate areas for each city I will have quite a few social networks all on the one domain-Is this a good idea?, I would like each social network to focus on only one city
