    The domain I want is taken but there are some options available with random words stuck on the start or end such as online, site, today. Does google frown upon these? Would it be better to go for an extension other than .com? Or will the .com really help rankings?

    Some other options I have would be to go for a country specific domain, using a hypen or putting the words backwards

    The domain in question isn't being used by the owner but they want several thousand pounds for it which I dont have

    So, if my niche was games consoles for example what would be best:

    Gamesconsolestoday.com
    Gamesconsolessite.com
    Consolesgames.com
    Gamesconsoles.org.uk (.co.uk is taken)
    gamesconsoles.nu
    Games-consoles.com
    random name which isnt really keyword friendly

    My site will be targeting the uk market

    Have a look at makewords.com Put in your keyword and it will add on different words and tell you if they're available.

    That is about as close to games consoles as you can get, and, it is even a .com. :))
    Did you mean to include that in your list of possibilities?

    games-consoles.com is your best bet for SEO. Not so good for branding. If you want people to type it in, they will type in the version without the hyphen. But the search engines will see the hyphen as a space, so it is perfect for that.

    I agree with the people above me. The domain game-consoles.com is the best option. It's a .com extension and is very close to your keywords if you are competing for "game consoles".

    If you are going to use your domain as brand, the best option for me is use a domain without - and dot come, remember people remember more .com domains :) If you are going to use it to get traffic and then use this traffic to redirect to another domain (your brand), you can use - or .org, net, info etc :)
