Your statement that you are trying to rank for a popular keyword is a bit confusing. You are right to start with trying to find the right set of keywords first but you need to find a keyword set that is not heavily competed for, yet still offers a decent amount of searches. Usually a popular keyword is popular for searches and web site builders, alike. Google's keyword tool does an excellent job of providing different keyword ideas for niches and micro niches; but, not only do you need to know what people are looking for, you need to know whether you have a shot at competing for the traffic. Preferably, you want to choose a keyword combo that has less than 500,000 (and preferably less than 150,000) competing pages in a phrase search on Google. You then need to look at the top ten sites listed for that keyword combo and see if they have left any holes in their marketing campaigns or web site design that will allow you to leapfrog any or all of them. Do they have the keywords in their URL, their title tags, their description tags and their headers, for instance? How many links do they have and how many of them are .gov or .edu links? What is the Google Page Rank for each of those sites and what are the ages of their domains? This can take a lot of time. Although SEO for Firefox can tell you about your competitors' link building campaigns, their PR and the age of their sites, it does not analyze the pages of those sites for holes in their structure (meta, headers, etc). I use Market Samurai to find my keyword niches. It does it all - finds the number of searches and provides all of the competition's site "holes" as well as number of competing sites and link analysis. It automaticaaly searches for viable subniches and microniches, as well. Additionally, it has tons of other tools for building relevent article or video content as well as entire modules for PPC. I have found it to be an invaluable tool! As far as finding the main things that people are looking for, Jelba provided quite a starting spot. Keep your eyes and ears open and listen to what people are talking about. What are their problems, fears, hopes and dreams? What are they focussing in on in the news and on popular social networks like Digg or delicious? Finally, go to any bookstore and look at the magazine section. There are tons of magazines devoted to a variety of topics and advertisers are paying big bucks to be in those magazines. That should tell you that people are buying products that those magazines are focused on or are buying the things that are advertised within them.

As noted above Amazon bestseller list, Yahoo! Questions and Answers, Yahoo! top searches on their home page. You can also type in various forms of the following phrase into your favorite keyword search tool and see how many different returns you get: How to Can I Where Do I Where Can I Just as an example, when I typed in the phrase "How Do I" one of the search returns was "How do I download music" and it had 22,200 Global Monthly Searches
I do two things exactly: 1. Keyword Research using the Adwords Tool 2. Searching allintitle: for any popularly searched phrases or combination of popularly searched phrases to measure the competition for that exact title
