when I type in "link:xpirtdesign.com" in Google, it shows at least 2 links from the Digital Point forums. Though I post in many different forums, Digital Point seems to show up. I know using link: in Google shows only a small part of the total links, but the fact that they show up there should mean that Google does like them, and yes, they do work. I'm sure the quality and relevancy of the forum should also be taken into account.

I cannot say for sure but lean towards that is is good to get backlinks from forums even if they are not relevant. Perhaps the serps look at how many people actually click thru to your site. So, if my site is not relevant to the forum but many people click thru on my links in signature than the serps think that something about the site is attractive and popular to be getting so many clicks and than perhaps count that link as more important than a link that does not get as many clicks.. (IMHO)

Ofcourse posting links on relevent forums can definitely hurt your rankings and worse Google can even penalize you for this. Very recently Google stopped counting backlinks from many forums due to heavy spam. I think bloggers have lost a great source of link building.

It will neither hurt nor will help you. Still if you have got that link from really good website then it will surely help you. But getting links vulgar sites will surely hurt you..

Ha ha ha noob alert all over this thread. Dofollow forums do help, I used this tactic exclusively on one of my sites which went to 1st page Google for a med competitive keyword.

Backlinks from forums are actually really good. If a forum has a large userbase, you're exposing your link to all those users in that forum. It helps PR also.

What a game! I can see it takes lots of work to build up backlinks but I think the developers at Google are working hard to make sure they dont get tricked. They want their site to return relevant and quality sites when their users search for something. Building up relevant and useful sites and then building up links will ultimately OVER TIME build up a site, right?

I dont want to sound like an expert on this topic, but there is some common sense isnt there? Wouldnt Google's ultimate goal is to make their search users happy with the results? If people build crap sites and then do all these games to "game the system", Google's users wont be happy to use Google.

Great article, thanks. I agree and I cant for the life of me see how google can write an algorithm that would determine if that backlink you got was from a related website or not.

I cant see how they can define "related"

I disagree with Seofx, the links from forums are not garbage. Infact you get both backlinks as well as traffic from making useful post in your related forum
