See.. There is nothing conclusive and perfect when you get these answers.India is so huge and diverse by all means that not many will be able to give you an answer to a degree to you would expect.

Go 30 kms east you don't understand the language and know not what you are being served in the hotel.

You will find a construction worker having a mobile but a manager not having one.

You will see someone making 300$ per month having a bike but a 100 times wealthy man not having a cable television connection. India is fun! :)

Rich and the poor, communists and capitalists, christians and muslims, scammers and spammers ( Uhhh... That did bring a smile on your face.. huh?:mad::p) co exist.

I don't know what you are talking About. Till a few months back I made $10k/month and I was no way near upper middle class. Upper Middle Class is atleast $10,000/month rather than per year.

You can "Survive" anywhere in the world for $10/day.

Good Docs in India make Around 30-50k/year it's the those run of the mill docs who make below 10k/year.

Thats right 35% people live below $1/day. That comes out to 400 million people. Roughly the population of US.

Well, I am a pass out from IIT Delhi.. don't want to brag about it. but yes, IIT Delhi is the best Undergraduate university in India and like 3rd-4th in the world. And, Yet. An average package after you graduate from that college/university is around $12k/year. Surely sucks.
The point is yet the guy from that college earning 12k a year can live is life well happily here 'initially'...

Whatever it be.. I make more than that amount in a month. And, thats when I dun understand if I wasted my four years reading all that shitty engineering books, or I was luckier to have my interest in WWW.

All those who say India is third world, esp. Americans, please check back the status of Indians in your country and what the status of your country would be if there were no Indians working there. Agreed You got money, but we got the brains ;)

Well, as for OP.. 1USD is nothing, but 1000USD is a lot here.
I wont agree for 2.5usd meals, you just get enough to fill your stomach.
But, what matters more is how much you earn and how much you require to survive.
    Earnings - Survival Requirement = % Luxury ;)
