You dont need advanced, that would be more like blackhat. One of the best things that you can do is concentrate on the site itself first, a website must have something worth staying for. You can build all the backlinks under the sun but if when a visitor reaches your site they dont find something that they either need or are suprised to find that your site is better then you quickly lose them.

Many things that were said above are perfectly true, but try to add to those : Quality Articles + RSS + Web 2.0. Also try to get .EDU and .GOV backlinks. Everything here in a white/grey hat manner. These are for a faster indexing and ranking. Of course you have to be patient, but on top of it I believe everyone wants or even NEEDS to rank in a decent amount of time, not next year or the year after it.

Daily posting are a very good thing to do ... you will surely "feed" the engines with what they want and when they want it: at least three times a day , like most of us eats Also try to be relevant and original because if you're not you can get it the other way around. Unfortunately people don't understand that and in they're search for very fast methods of ranking they disregard this essential thing, CONTENT, no matter the nature ... text - image - videos.
