DMOZ, BOTW, Yahoo still carry some weight. JoeAnt a bit less. There are niche specific directories that carry weight. Overall, Google in particular has de-emphasized the importance of most directories, clearly in response to a lot of SEO gaming. Too bad, because some directories actually are helpful on occassion.
Thats right only top directories like DMOZ, Yahoo, etc are important and few other niche directories. Even if you avoid submitting to directories you won't lose anything.

What do you mean by this? My take is that directory links are usually low value links for a number of reasons: Most link out to almost any site and have way too many outbound links on each page Most have no quality control Most pages in these directories have close to zero Pagerank There are a few good directories, but I can't see the value in submitting to directories as a link building strategy. Perhaps someone who does this can share their results, because I haven't seen a site achieve a good ranking due to submitting their URL to lots of directories.
I suspect he is talking about anchor text. If one can target the anchor text then even low value links can have a significant effect (given enough of them). Do an allinachor: search on google and comapre to the normal SERPs and you will see what I mean.
for sure there are good directories. google counts Yahoo directory links as a good backlink. DMOZ is another good one. BOTW, Business.com, and few other directories are out there which are good as well. aside from these giants which all cost ton of money for submission, there are some individual SEO friendly directories out there that worth submitting to. depending on how you use your directory submission campaign, you can get some benefit out of it
Most are a waste of time. A few are worthwhile. DMOZ is still worthwhile, but it takes almost a year to get in. The Yahoo directory is still held in high regard. What you want from directories are ones that are very strict about who they let in.
I completely agree. For the most part, a link is a link. Obviously, PR has some impact, but based on the google algorithm, I don't think it is worth spending 300 bucks to get in yahoo or beating your head against the wall trying to get in to DMOZ. Your time could be much better spent developing quality links.
For me, links from directories are still useful and relevant for link building campaign. You just have to find good directories with high PR. Dcrtic have a good list, they also update it with new directory sites. Better check it out!
