Is building backlinks from forums that are not rellevant to my site can hurt my sites rank in the search engines or will it improve it?

Since the links are not relevant, it will probably hurt your rankings slightly. However, forum links are largely ignored by search engines now due to spam.

This is absolutely WRONG... Non relevant Forum links will NEVER hurt your ranking, If that were the case then all I would have to do is point some non relevant forum links towards my competitors

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. I will always avoid irrelevant links where possible.

Link Building can definitely be an extremely difficult task if you want to take it on based on purely human labor to go out and request for links, whether they are one way or reciprocal. Do you actually have to spend large amounts of human resources on this? Well, from my own personal experience I can say “yes”

I recently read a great article on copyblogger - to summarize it, content is no longer kind, context is. Make sure your backlink profile is genuine and from relevant places.

Relevance is good but not necessary, I have been building links for years and I really don't care if the links are relevant or not because they all work about the same. I personally think it would take to much effort and system resources for Google, Yahoo, and Bing to make sure that all links are relevant, kind of like an SEO blog linking to a web design firm, how would Google be able to determine relevance? What about a camping site linking to a good local restaurant? So ya, it doesn't matter that much at all.

Think creatively and you'll be able to get more traffic from online forums.

People will be interested to find out more about you and what you have on your sig link if you contribute something thoughtful and offer genuine advice. So, do not set a limit to yourself and start posting more high quality tips on online forums so you can get their attention and turn them into potential customer when they arrive on your website.

I really think now that SERP is trying hard enough to check such spam, link farm, and other SEO method that are not really HUMAN. I guess SERP is now far smarter than before that all your effort must be close to human. this is just my observation. :p

Agree with this. Even a non-related forum signature can still bring targeted traffic though. Not as much as a related niche - but it doesn't hurt if you want to spend the time posting on forums

Non-relevant links will not hurt you, however they won't really help you.

The best kind of link is from a related-niche site, for example, a link from a Pet Forum would benefit a Pet Site much better than if that link pointed to a Sports Site. The search engines are great at figuring out when a link is relevant or not and will credit accordingly.
