Understanding Your Health Insurance - When Does an HMO Make Sense


Health insurance terms got you confused? HMO? PPO? DHMO? Don't know what's the difference? With so many health insurance options out there, it's hard to determine which one is right for you. There are many questions to consider when picking out health insurance, but one heard quite often is "Should I get an HMO or a PPO?" There are many misconceptions surrounding HMO's, but for many HMO's are the best option.

So, what exactly is an HMO? HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization - it is an organization designed to provide healthcare with a clear objective on managing health insurance costs. A defining feature of an HMO is the use of a primary care physician. The primary care physician acts as the first point of contact with the patient. The physician assesses the patient, provides care, and refers the patient to a specialist if necessary. Typically, every person providing care must be in the HMO network in order for the patient to be covered. This poses the dilemma: does my doctor accept my HMO?

When making your health insurance elections, it is very important to consider what types of insurance does your doctor accept? Unlike a PPO, when you sign up with an HMO you are effectively "locked" into that network if you wish to be covered by medical insurance. This is a common complaint amongst patients with HMO health insurance, when they find out the specialist or doctor they wish to see does not accept their insurance.

Health insurance is expensive, but an HMO is often much less expensive than a PPO. An HMO will typically require a copay ($20-$50) and then cover the remaining balance, while a PPO will typically only cover the first 80% of the cost, leaving you stuck with 20% of the bill. An HMO will lock you inside the network; you can choose a specialist outside of your PPO, but will often times pay a higher co-insurance (60% vs 80%). It is not uncommon to see 2 patients seeing the same doctor, receiving the same care, and getting vastly different bills depending on their health insurance, with the HMO always being cheaper.

An HMO is a great choice for many - in fact, a recent 2009 Consumer Reports survey has HMO's beating PPO's on cost, customer service, and billing issues. Keep all of this in mind when making your health insurance elections; it might save you an arm and a leg.
