Wouldn't that hurt your ranking in Google search results? I've heard somewhere that Google doesn't like when you get backlinks rapidly - but I could be wrong... I'm new to all this.

Sweely, because google index backlinks overtime, so they do not show up all at once. If google implemented something to ban a site due to rapidly gaining backlinks it would have killed the likes of myspace, twitter before they even started due to the massive viral growth some sites recieve.
