short answer yes it can. There are certain percentage of people will click your link in your signature.

You can use a tracker to track that...

I agree with some of the above, your trafic goes up while your posting and quickly dies while your not, however unless your posting in the category that your site relates to, chances are its not trafic thats really interested

It is very hard to generate enough interest on niche subjects to get active forum posts. It think it is better to buy a forum than to build one.

If the users click on the link you can get the targeted traffic. But I think forum signatures is counted as backlink.

Only search engines give targeted traffic.

Forums have good PR and provide valuable SEO, that's why they make silly restrictions on posts..

You need to participate actively with good posts. If you create the impression that you know what you're talking about, some people will click on your signature link. A lot of forum posters don't seem to realize that the quality of their posts are important rather than just getting the backlinks through their signatures. :(

People buy from other people and brands they like and trust. It's pretty rare to build trust without first establishing a relationship of some kind - and a forum is a fantastic interchange for discussion, building relationships, getting and giving ideas - and building your own brand.

Whilst there are other ways of doing this, a forum allows for back-and-forth discussion over and over again. A blog creates discussion, but it's the blog owner who initiates each topic and is in control. Whilst I'm not saying forums are "out of control" - they are thanks to great moderating teams - the discussion is much more open.

Forums can gain you credibility and trust - but like any 'relationship building' activity, you've got to keep working at it. A couple of top tips:

    * Visit the forum at least 3 times a week
    * Post helpfully and build credibility
    * Never "sell" on a forum unless doing so explicitly and within forum guidelines. Your trying to build credibility, not a sales pitch -->> Direct people to your pitch in your signatures
    * Contribute to forums in your niche that are big enough to sustain discussion, but small enough for you to shine through. DigitalPoint is a great forum, but I'll never get to know everyone. Isn't it the largest forum on the net?

Lastly, forums bring targeted traffic. SabQat says that "only search engines bring targeted traffic" - I disagree. You're right that people usually begin their search at Google etc. but that doesn't mean all other websites apart from the destination. A review website can provide qualified targeted traffic to a merchant surely? It leverages great content to drive warm, willing-to-buy leads to the merchants.

In the context of a forum, it means sticking specifically to forums within your niche - although this is kinda obvious. But nail down even further; forums have sub-forums with their own classified threads. Why not look to target your postings there; so you only get people in your niche, looking at a particular topic being exposed to your postings and signature.

Forums are great traffic generators, but they take work!

I have been posting on Yahoo ANswers for the sports and I have been adding my sports site to the answers as a source.

Problem is, they use a no-follow tag on them, so that isn;t helping as much as it should.

Simple answer is yes. If you post in forums related to your site, you'll get relevant traffic. For instance, I run a flash game arcade, posting here doesn't do me nearly as much benefit as posting on gamespot forums or flashgamelicense forums.

I get lot of traffic through forums. You'll get traffic only if the forum is relevant to your site/blog.
