Just wondering if people in other countries have the same social/neighbourhood pressure to keep their lawns neat like we do in Australia? I know the Americans are probably more fanatical about it than us - but what about in India, Bulgaria, Romania, and wherever else DP people are from? I feel like an idiot mowing something that's going to grow back in 2 weeks. It's like painting your house with water paint, and having it wash off every time it rains. I'm sick of it.
HA! I've often thought the same thing myself.... We live in the US - in the Northeastern part of the country. I mow the lawn once a week in the summer. We are on the main street in a small town and don't want the place looking shabby. Gotta mow the lawn, do the trimming, sweep the street in front of the house and sweep the driveway when I'm done. 2 hour job. The way I see it is that the place looks nice and I've gotten some exercise. But, I can tell you it's not my favorite day each week. Especially on the days when it's 90 degrees outside, which I'm sure you see plenty of in Australia.
I had the pleasure of doing it the other day just before the oldies got back from overseas. I had to give them the impression I was looking after the house, you know
Happened the same to me when I lived with my parents, but when I got married and moved to my own home, I move lawn once a week (kind of like proud to keep the home beautiful). Really have mixed feeling every-time I think about it. How bad I was, sorry Dad!
>I feel like an idiot mowing something that's going to grow back in 2 weeks. I take it you are taking advantage of the reduction in water restrictions?
I think an alarm goes off somewhere when we turn our taps on here. The only time I use an outside tap is to hose down my bike. Oh... and when I say lawn. I mean grass. And when I say grass, I mean mostly weeds. Actually I'm in Central Vic (most of the time). Did I hear mumblings that we're going to have to pay the government to collect and use our own tank water soon? That's getting ridiculously close to paying for the air we breathe.
In the US it depends on the class of the neighborhood. On one end of the spectrum they look like a garbage dump and on the other end the neighborhood requires that you leave your lawn maintenance to a company that comes out and does everyone's once a week.
In the UK we love to put stripes in the lawn it does look very nice but hard work i usually cut our grass once a week but in the peak of the summer that can go upto 3 times a week.
we got the nicest selection of weeds growing in our yard and it gets cut every 2 weeks. but thats over now, lawnmower has been put up for the winter.
Mow the lawn three times a week? You have to be kidding me? That's like a full time job if you have a big lawn.
We've only got about another month to go and everything will be dirt and dust here. Last summer was unbearable. I'm not going to put up with any crap this year, the first day it hits 40c I'm getting on a plane and heading for Tasmania
Nope i enjoy it during the peak of the summer the petrol mower is set to give it a close cut and we dont have any weeds in the lawn as it is treated every 3 months for moss and weeds.
lol do you get naked and rub up against the freshly cut grass you like it that much? jokes i've never known anyone who likes mowing the lawn, so just a bit shocked.
When we had an acre and a half, my wife always mowed the lawns...LOL Now we have no lawns in an apartment block.....and loving it!!!
Have you noticed quite a few Aussie's have tuned into this thread? We might as well throw a shrimp on the bbq whilst mowing the lawn
haha I'm in Australia too and I'm lazy as hell when it comes to mowing the lawn. I think my old Victa lawnmower is about to die... no more mowing ?
Fuck it I reckon. Put your feet up, down a cold one, and watch the grass grow What's the alternative, get frustrated with a lawnmower which is packing it in.
It's a few posts up ... I've noticed a couple of Shetlands around town that seem to move from house to house. Maybe that's the secret. I could almost be convinced to fix my fences if I could get these guys to do the mowing:
