I do believe it plays a role. How much, I can't really say.
I look forward for the experts to reply!

Yes, internal link structure and the use of anchor text links within websites is very important.

    - Internal links can be used to help establish relevancy for important keywords and keyword phrases.

    - A good internal link structure also helps search engine bots and spiders crawl website more efficiently.

I have thousands of internal links among my pages. It's good for SEO because, among other reasons, it allows you to tell the search engines precisely what the linked-to page is all about, by your proper choice of keywords for the anchor text.

As important or more so to me is that internal links allow me to refer my readers to other, related pages in which they may be interested. Without those internal links, they would most likely not find those pages.

To add to what has been said already, internal links also help to increase the 'importance' (rankings / search engine visibility) of certain pages if you link to them frequently.

An example: most peoples' home pages have better search engine visibility than the internal pages. This is due, in part, to the fact that most, if not all, of your website's internal pages link to the home page, thus passing more 'link juice' to home page.

Its one of the most important factors. A properly interlinked website does better in SERPs, ranking, and traffic.

When linking to your homepage, make sure to use your keyword as an anchor text, not "Home". You're not marketing homes, you're marketing your website. I hope this helped.

Interlinking generally increases crawlability by creating strong mesh between web pages which further may results in fast indexing.

All good points, but how much is too much? Couldn't your internal linking structure push you over the top for density?

internal linking is good when you dont over use it... in one article or content, i prefer to use three to four links to other pages... if you put too much this can result unrelevant information to be linked to that articles, and/or, maybe lead to spamming.

It's almost like a micro-external link - where it gives internal pages more weight with search engines.
