I was wondering if anyone has a link to research done on what percent of an average websites traffic comes from a search engine. I know its basically impossible to get a completely accurate assessment but I'm just looking for a researched estimate to help strengthen my business plan. See ya, Chase Brumfield
I have websites that get 90% of traffic from SE's, and I have websites that get less than 25% from SE's. An average would be meaningless. Better to focus on the purpose of the website and the demographics of its visitors. That should serve as a guide for the best means of promotion.
So for the business plan would it be a good idea just to state "a significant portion of most websites traffic comes from a search engine, therefore search engine optimization will be a necessity". I was hoping I could find some actuall research to make my claims seem a little more solid. Thanks, Chase Brumfield
Search Engine traffic is the best kind of traffic because it brings in more and more people by searching for types of keywords. However, building up rankings in SERPS is very hard... currently my sites have about 20% traffic from search engines, 90% of it is Google. However within the next couple months I can see that traffic percentage double
Depends how optimized the site is. Over time it'll be more. Right now one of my sites has like 2% because nobody anchor links back to it. Most is direct or from referrals.
Again, it depends entirely on the purpose of the site. We maintain a site that serves shareholders of a company. The vast majority of traffic is from shareholders. (The vast majority of the site requires login.) It fulfills its purpose quite nicely without the need of organic search traffic. It is #1 for its name, its acronym and its purpose, which makes it readily available to shareholders that might be looking for it via an SE. Do to its purpose and target audience, organic search traffic is not all that relevant. We maintain the E-commerce site for the same company. the percentage of organic search traffic is pretty much reversed for the shareholder site. It ranks on dozens of product related terms that drive traffic. Two completely different sites serving different purposes and with different target audiences. Everything begins with defining the purpose of the site and the demographics of its users - including which SE's to optimize for, use of social networking, videos, etc.
180% from Google? Sweet! Ontopic: SE percentages change a lot. Some sites will get better SE traffic, while others wont get much at all. That being said, more is better when it comes to SE traffic, because it's free.
Alright guys... looks like legitimate average numbers isn't going to happen so that's good to know. Thanks for the numbers you guys did provide however that gives me some good things to think about. And willybfriendly... wish I was like your shareholders site and had no need for search engine traffic...but my site is going to very much depend on organic search traffic..... Now on to finding a good search engine optimization company that doesn't charge an arm and a leg a month... Thanks guys, Chase Brumfield
traffic from search engines depends on the content that is fetched through engines to the people who search the keywords... if your content is pure than you can even get 100% traffic from search engines. This way you get even returning visitors to your site.
The percent is different for each site and as someone already said, the average is meaningless. Some people are in a niche where the competition is so fierce that their websites are not in the first 50-100 Google's results. Of course that their percentage of search engine traffic is insignificant. Other people don't even know what SEO is and their websites are ... a big fat zero. And so on ...

yeah dude...as i told, you can even get 100%. I dint said you get, i said "even" means it is possible to get 100% traffic from SE.
If money is an issue, perhaps consider learning how SEO works for yourself, SEO is a life long process for many sites. And the companies that charge less, there is a reason for that -- remember the saying of "you get what you paid for" -- truer words have never been said. Exactly, i own hundreds of sites -- and they are all differ drastically. It depends on your site, your niche, and the business model employed with regards to marketing. Blogs for example, are going to have a lower % of traffic from search engines -- as they are going to get more return visitors from people who read your blog on a regular basis.
We have a software to show where the traffic is from.It seems that only a small part is from SE.Most of the traffic is from signature in the forum or ads in some forums.
Not sure what the average "average" is. You have to do the research for yourself on your own site. My keywords don't get less than 50% organic traffic. Some keywords are as high as 80% +.
Analytics will tell you this. I'd say that over all my 60 websites, about 70% of the traffic is organic. It really depends of the types of sites you have
