Confessions of a directory owner...

If you have joined free directories and invested countless hours creating listings as a part of you link building campaign then read this:

#1 I (the directory owner) can't feed a bird in my backyard on a free listing.

    2. If you are just grabbing directory freebies and never intend to pay me a penny I assure you will lose 100% of your time invested on my sites.

    3. Most broad category directories are pretty much worthless. Niche directories are hundreds of times more useful because the content of the entire directory is keyword rich. A directory that is listed on the first page of Google are truly valuable. Others sites lost in cyberspace are nearly worthless.

    4. I can change or dump or throw a no follow tag on your listing and you can't say jack. I see every keystroke that someone makes. I can ban anyone I want for life with a single click.

    5. If you pay me my modest directory fee. You could talk me into me giving you a listing for life. I also can be be your friend and can give you priceless advice and help make you a "player" in my master network. (I have over 6,000 direct contacts in my groups).

    6. If you think working for free is a good idea... then great, your hired.

    7. When you get a free link from someones blog, directory or other source the site owner will eventually cut you off at the knees because you don't care a hoot about them.

    8. You are much better off with a reciprocal business relationship. When you pay someone the other guy wants to make YOU happy... that give YOU power and the respect you deserve!

There are some sites that will keep your link alive forever once it has been included.

They care about your useful content.

If they were to remove the link, then their content becomes less useful.

So, it is selfish motives that can keep a link around for years.

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple thank you note to the site maintainer. Don't forget those.

You guys are kidding yourself... in thinking that you are helping the owner of a niche directory with your link spam and content.
My directories are paid only, but they still get hacked by those tying to spam for free.

There are some great free directories that bring your site countless amount of traffic,.

It's not because someone is thinking that he know it all and that he has to charge other websites for submitting to his directory that we should all think free directories are useless.

As we all know, where ever you go there are good and bad people that's makes a society.

I may be wrong but this is just my humble opinion.

    Thank you

Welcome to the world of phpld... you will always get spam regardless of whether its free or paid when using the script. (other then that its an awesome script)

i suggest you buy a spam mod from DP member "an0n" which comes with support or you change the submit page from submit.php to something else
so that your not on the targeted spam submitter a few use.

I agree. This applies mostly to niche directories because it helps the directory gather a lot of keyword rich content. In addition, niche directories like to keep links to good sites to increase their direct traffic from people coming back to the directory as a resource in their niche.

No biggie... somebody is venting a bit and telling the truth. People don't get into business for the purpose of NOT making money, and though you may not always get what you pay for, it's less often you get what you *don't* pay for. Too many on the net want to get a paycheck without investing a dime or breaking a sweat.

He gets points for honesty and for painting an accurate portrait of what building a directory entails... a constant battle with spam.

Honestly the OP is absolutely right on every point that he makes, even if its is a bit aggressive in tone. People really just need to bite the bullet and pay the fees associated with their link campaign in order to get their sites the traffic and ranking that they need.

Well that's nice to know! Money rules the world..And your directorys.

There really are some great directorys that offer free listings, they also offer paid listings with more exposure..I think that's probably the best way.

    Goodluck.

I have been dealing with free directory owners for well over 5 years. There are some like the OP but there are still quite a few that are not like that at all.

The problem is that a small percentage of owners have large quantities of directories (often in the hundreds). If you could somehow ignore those then you would find that the percentage of good ones is still quite high.

Free directories, like paid ones, have their uses. For these particular uses, they get the job done.

I must agree with the OP though, many people believe free directories will be their saviour.

I run a directory of sorts and am able to manage any spam or junk coming in, I offer a 2 week to 1 month free trial for users to see if the directory is worth their time, if it's not then they get removed, if it is then they pay.

If people try the site and don't pay, then either I didn't do a good job or they weren't going to pay either way.

Wanting people to pay for something without knowing if it's going to do well is silly, how many directories are out there and how many are actually worth $10/month or whatever the owner is asking.

Had a free directory for a while but most of the submitters almost always submit their site to the wrong category with spammy descriptions. So as of today, its taken off "free" mode.

Why write this thread? do you really think that people are going to pay a submission on your directory after this post? Just wainting time.
