Forum post links are not what they used to be. The seo benefit is minimal now, but you can still get some traffic from them.

For that reason the forum should be related to your niche to see any benefit.

Forum links are useful. And of course it depends on your niche. For example, I can get hundreds of visitors right away if somebody links organically to my site, whether a single blog post or a so-called "money page", which can grow to thousands of visitors over time.

Forum signatures are still useful too, as long as they are dofollow and pass PR. Like gdi says, a backlink is a backlink. It's just that the specific forum page does not have as high PR as the forum's main page itself, but every little bit does help.

 

Forum sig may not be as it used to be in terms of Backlinks but it is still good for getting targeted traffic...

 

I though all forums are no Follow... that's what I have heard but I guess that's a wrong info.

 

to make sure if it is a do follow or not Check for the source code or download a plug in that check if a site is do follow or no follow...

I focus primarily on article marketing and that works for me.

Secondary methods are social bookmarking and blog commenting (not in a spammy way, just on blogs I like to read using real names, not keywords.)

 

I think it could help, having your links in your signature could help your site get crawled more often, also a link is a link. But, I doubt it's one of the best things you could do.

 

The best way to get backlinks is to try multifarious methods. The following is my arrangement everyday:
half an hour/writing blog;
half an hour/wrting articles;
half an hour/comments on dofllow blogs;
one hour/submits directories;
one hour/forum;
and others...
