Is it worth investing in directory submissions these days? Many people are saying that they no longer make a difference. Is that true? What do you guys think?

They're useful for new sites trying to get themselves established while a more comprehensive link building strategy is devised, evaluated and implemented. Other than that, not so much.

And yet their supposed "worth" and "value" literally pale in comparison to getting a link from the owner of a related Web site you spent about 15-20 (or however long it takes, depending on the site, the owner, and his/her mood) minutes researching and emailing.

Like I said, they're good for getting your foot in the proverbial door, but not much else.

Links from forums signatures (like this one) are much better then useless never crawled directories.
Waste of time if you are submitting to all directories. Aim for top directories only.

And yet even forum profiles/signatures pale in comparison to a good quality merit-based link.

As previously mentioned, quality is better than quantity.
Check PR of Directory and page your link will be on. Higher the better.
Also number of outbound links on page - fewer the better.
Is it listed in DMOZ and Yahoo, giving it authoritive status.
Is it over 10 years old - authoritive status.
Is it niche related to your site.
Will the link be no more than 3 levels deep. Deeper and Google ignores.

Free submissions can take weeks, months if never to become live listings.
Far better in my view to take the paid for option with all the right benefits for a good backlink and traffic.

Most of the free directories are worthless but if you really want to stuck with directories go for the paid reputed one's like yahoo, business.com etc.

I recommend getting into all of the higher ranked ones (that are well categorized and have legitimate links (non porn, etc). PR3 or higher. That will keep you busy for a year if you are also blogging, commenting, articling, PR releasing, and all other link building methods.

i WOULD SAY DEPENDING ON YOUR NICHE. If you are going to try to rank for something not so competitive, sure they can work. If you are going to try to outrank people in competetive areas, you need SOLID, ONE WAY QUALITY***RELEVANT*** LINKS to your site. I am a firm believer in quality over quanity.

Also, mix it up, dont just stick to one thing...promote content and have it naturally linked to is the 100% best way to link build.

why is it so important to have your web site listed on so many other sites? Not only that more customers will find and use your services, but also your ranking in the search engines will dramatically rise. It is very important to have as many links to your web page as possible to get a good ranking in search engines.
