Anyone know a list of types of forum contest that could be run to help promote SEO?

"Plain 'ol posting contests" work very well when the prize is attractive.

We had a three-month-long posting and referring contest to launch AdminAddict (http://www.adminaddict.net/forum), and without it, I don't think we would have ever launched. The prizes were "awesome" according to the members, but it wasn't cheap.
We were seeing about 1,000 posts per day within days of opening, and it was all content-relevant.
As a result we had plenty of discussions and threads, which is all content for the search engines. We've had another contest since then which went well, and we plan to have more in the future.

much thanks..... and BTW I LOVE your website!

Didnt posting contests did anything at all for SEO or even content. Most posters I would assume would just respond with "great idea" or "thanks" or other similar posts.

You can keep track of post count, but you cant keep track of quality posts.

How did you pick a winner?

    thanks

For SEO I think you could try article writing contest as blog posts or something like that.

However for new forums this might not work that well. You would better off with a posting contest.

    Thanks. :)

There are add-ons that allow you to allot point values for certain actions (i.e. new reply = 5 points, new thread = 10 points), but you can require that posts be greater than a certain length in characters in order to qualify. Therefore, you have the ability to only reward posts that are lengthy and therefore of higher quality.
Using the same aforementioned add-on, users accrue points for posting, and the user with the most points wins. :)

Forum contests is an explosive help for a new forum for SEO purpose. It helps a great deal. Article writing contest could also be helpful to a certain extent comparatively. Both of these are effective...You should go the one you find convenient and convincing for you in accordance with your purpose....

I've seen forum contests that pertain to the quality of posts rather than quantity.

    thanks

vbExperience allows you to do that, but you cant reset the count from a certain date. It always calculates from the begining of the forum and currently there is no way around that.

Cyb - top poster in X months -- doesnt have an input for replies vs new threads started

If you cant post it here, can you PM me the Mod add-on you used?

    thanks again
