Much like blogs, directories can die very quickly, i have literally seen some last only a couple of weeks before they morph into something completely different.

It's about selection, it's fine that more are born, many will not stick around, some will last a little longer and some will last a lot longer.

Some, actually hundreds, infact maybe thousands, are started by overly optimistic, head in the clouds, misinformed people that quickly lose interest when they realise that no you cant go to bed and wake up tomorrow morning with a queue of submissions and a bunch of Notification Of Payment Received emails waiting for you every day.

There are not enough directories, but there are too many mistakes. :)

There are way too much. Instead of building 1 good directories, too many people are building 100 crappy ones. In my opinion, quality is more important than quantify.

There are many directories but the best ones live for long...

there are so many directories online.
makes it hard to pick the right ones.

one must do some research to find out which directories are worth going on with..

Exactly. Spend some time on this forum and you'll learn a lot about the 5% of good directories and the 95% of crap.

Why do some people create a network of hundreds of directories, all with the same basic design and all on the same server? Can someone please explain why people do this?

Maybe they listen to the types of bad information that go around where they think if you can earn a little with one that surely a hundred of the same will work.

Blame self proclaimed gurus that write junk telling people how to make a lot of money with adsense with hundreds of sites.

Also cheap first year .info's make it too tempting for them too, then theres the same banner ad that you will see across a large network of directories, usually not related to the directory but the owner is probably thinking exposure.

I imagine also to flip them to unsuspecting people that believe they just bought a winner.

For some people it will always be quantity over quality.

:) its a little funny because creating a 100 all the same general directories is sort of screwing up the situation for the owner of them, they have no intention of listening to advice though and it wont stop.

You can bet that the people that do this probably own a 100 article directories, 100 blogs, 100 proxy thingys, lol, etc etc :)

99% of the directories on the internet are junk.

IMO, we really don't need many directories on the web. The search engines do a much better job of providing information.

I have done my bit for cleaning up the web.....I have closed 2 of my web directories....:).

A few good ones, but not many. How many times have you ever went to a directory site and searched for something. Not very many I'll bet. Some of the directory sites you can tell are just a spamming ground, as the title and description is obviously nothing worth visiting. Probably many just post for a backlink.

i cant find a good/better for my blog back to a few years ago,
and then i learned and built up directories for my blog at the beginning stage...
now it's completely different, i still cannot figure out why people are willing to spend money on some QBC/MFA "directories".
