How long should it take to gain stable top ten rankings?

I know this is a hard question. But I just want to see how fast people have gained top 10 rankings for your main 1 or 2 keywords. Not long tails. I have been SEOing for 7-8 months I hit top ten rankings for many long tails but they are never stable. I also still haven't hit my main keyword yet. I say competition for my keyword is mid to high. Thanks I just need someone who done it to help motivate me and others on this forum.

well in not so much long time you can get a high rank with competitive keyword but the thing is that you have to maintain that through doing seo in very right direction .... do proper seo for them dont use them twice or thrice in a day ....... do submissions in do follow directories or fourms .... try to put ur site in high pr social bookmarks

Well, it really depends on site niche, keyword competition and your strategy. Me I get top 10 position in one month period of link building.

It varies significantly from keyword to keyword. In some cases I have hit page 1 (sometimes even position #1) straight out of the gate and in other cases it has taken me up to a year or so.

Try to think of it like this... every page above you has a certain number of SEO "points". We can see the rankings but we have no idea of how many "points" it takes to achieve those rankings. Here's a totally hypothetical scenario...

    SERP 1 - 10 000 000 points
    SERP 2 - 5 000 000 points
    SERP 3 - 4 800 000 points
    SERP 4 - 4 798 000 points
    SERP 5 - 3 200 000 points
    SERP 6 - 1 000 000 points
    SERP 7 - 600 000 points
    SERP 8 - 200 000 points
    SERP 9 - 5 000 points
    SERP 10 - 1 000 points

In such a case it would be pretty simple to get a page 1 listing - you only need more than 1000 points to overtake the site at #10 and a further 1 000 000 points to get to #5.

To achieve a #2 ranking will take a lot of work (4 000 000 more points) and to jump from #2 to #1 will take more than double the work you have done so far in order to achieve that #2 ranking!

These so called "points" are just my hypothetical construct, but in real life they would be made up of number of links, quality of links, on page SEO, authority, PR, domain trust etc etc.

Naturally it is impossible to get an accurate score for each of the sites above you so you can't calculate how many points you will need or how long it will take to achieve them in order to get a page 1 ranking, nor can you calculate how large the gap is between the SERPs. In the above example you could easily jump from #5 to #2 because #4 and #3 are so close together that a very small boost will lift you over both of them. But a jump from #10 to #5 will take a lot of work and time because of the "points" difference.

I hope this make sense :)

BTW. Don't forget that there is no real upper limit... just because the site at #1 has 10 000 000 points, it doesn't mean that there isn't any room left above them. 10 000 001 points or more will get you to #1!

You can't really tell. If your niche is too competitive, it'll take you a year or so before you'll be able to outrank your competition. SEO should be a continuous process. Just keep on doing what you're doing to get a stable ranking.

I agree. The key phrase here is "SEO should be a continuous process". There is no (legitimate) shortcut to a top ten position. It's just a matter of keeping doing the right things and the positions will eventually follow. How long depends on the level of competition for the keywords though. For some, several years of hard work would be necessary.

SEO is not a 1 Day Job. In order to achieve top 10 Steady Rankings, you need to work and work and work on SEO Process on daily process. The more you work on it, the more chances of getting fixed rankings.

In order to get top 10 rankings, you need to work hard in right direction

You have to make some strong backlinks. Specially from your niche related sources. That will be very helpful to be very strong in GOOGLE SERP.

Keep working towards the popular keyword ranking in the long term, but go after some longtail keywords in the short term. I would rather be in top 5 for less heavy traffic keyword like 'apartment rentals' vs. page 2 or 3 for higher trafficked 'rentals' if that makes any sense.

As far as I am concerned, content is the key. Sites with rich and updated content about your main keyword/s, plus good backlinks gradually will lift your site close to the top. However, as was mentioned, seo is an ongoing process. Stop and your standing will eventually go down. And again, this is true if your competitors drink coffee and do nothing. Unfortunately this is not the case.

In my opinion I did it with a long tail keyword like I wanted to target my main keyword and made it long tail keyword like targeted keyword "book" long tail keyword "seo book usa" after 3 to 4 month I got 1st position for long tail. when I started seo for "book" my website was not in 1st 1000 SERPs but doing long tail strategy I got my webiste in 100 serps and after 2 months it was in top ten :)
    thats it

Yes, as others mentioned, the time/potential will depends entirely on the SEO strength of the existing competition.

But if the niche is "average" I think 3-6 months is reasonable.

I was recently promoting a "language learning" program for a friend. After creating some nice content (useful website), we paid and did favors for 5-6 inbound links from quality websites that ranked well for one of our target keyphrases. Within 4 months, we made it into Googles top 10 for that target keyphrase.
