For OS sake definitely its Windows 7. Much more reliable and advanced than Vista(Vista in fact sucks.)
If you are getting a laptop , try to resolve your need. Find the specific purpose to buy the laptop. Talk about this to any dealer and choose one.
If you want to check about the price please refer http://www.pcworld.com/products/computers/laptops.html
    thank you.

Whats your purpose for your laptop? If you play a little game or use 3D software, then you need a laptop that has a dedicated video card.

I'm customizing an HP Dv4t at HP's website..

It's coming out roughly to 600 dollars with delivery; with a thumbprint scanner, an HDTV scanner embedded, etc..awesome computer, 14.1 inch screen, and light.

    Good-looking, too. :D

I bought an Acer for the folks upstairs that is pretty nice. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4631395&CatId=3444

It was similar to that but without the blu ray drive(nutty expensive still) You will note that new stuff is coming with free upgrades for win 7. I have messed with win 7 quite a bit. While I frankly hate windows, win7 is actually just as fast as xp but a bit nicer looking I suppose.

I am eybeballing this one right now http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5210433&sku=G180-17006

I need to design somethings and or do 10 things at once so I need the screen real estate. That is not exactly all that portable. They really nail you on the screen size so anything smaller is much more reasonable.

whatever you get, it is likely coming with vista so be prepared to format it and get rid of a bunch of junk.

A good idea is to sign up for the tiger direct deal alerts at the top right of the screen. You will get an email a day with some really sweet deals.

Well, if you have not purchased it yet then you should go for DELL and Windows 7. :)
That would be a perfect combination.

I think you should tell us at first, what is the purpose of buying a new Laptop and how much you want to spend on. What is your budget?

    Buy a Vaio.
Wipe it first thing you get it, and put windows 2003 on it.

Vista is crap, and Windows 7 is just a mild improvement of it. NT is the way to go.

I have been using Toshiba's for 5+ years now. I would get a Toshiba with a Windows 7 operating system.
