Just searched Google for a few unrelated keywords and there appears to be little difference whether you used forum.domain.com or domain.com/forum.

domain.com/forums would be much better because it is viewed as an internal page to your site to the search engines but when you use forums.domain.com then search engines will consider it as a seperate domain.

yes domain/forum will be good option.your PR for domain will slowly spread to forum also and so on .if u take forum.domain.com then google dont allow your internal pages to get PR from main home page and doing seo also little diff. scince DP is very big site it can manage but we have to choose simple way .

Subdomain and subfolder does not make any difference in SEO.

Using subdomain is good for branding and using subfolder is easier to maintain.
