PR/Ranking Question

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Toon-c, Oct 3, 2009.

    Hello everyone ..
    I have a question,
if I get a link from the homepage of a PR5 trusted website (online since 2003) , but not "really" related to my site (actually my site is a "kind" of tips directory, so it's related to everything) .. does this have an impact on my PR ? and/or my ranking ?

    thanks for answering ..

Links can help and hurt PageRank and search engine position.

It would depend on many factors including but not limited to; how the page is linked to your site, the relevancy of the site of linking to your site, and the way your site is optimized internally.

Any link would help and the higher the PR, the better, even if it is not related to your site.

A Backlink from a PR5 page certainly supports your own PR/ranking

How much? it depends on various factors. Backlink with related theme and context helps much more than unrelated link. Also number of outgoing links isanother factor. If google regards your backlink as a traded link (for instance because it is in the footer), it may be useless!

There are a lot of other factors involved to increase your PR or ranking other than PR5 page backlink.

Try to make sure the links is
    1. Dofollow
    2. Proper hyperlinked keywords/keyphrase
    3. Low outbound links (both dofollow and nofollow)
    4. Location of your backlink (I prefer from content)

It will certainly increase your PR and ranking for anchored keyword but if your backlink is from related, the weight will be more.

No need to consider much on relevancy... try to get links from dofollow, high ranked sites.. avoid spam sites from link building

Thank you for answering .. all of you got rep+ ..

anyway, I know almost everything you said .. so to enlarge the discussion .. the webpage I got the link from has 69 total outgoing links .. links are 22% from the content .. my link is dofollow of course .. and it's almost in the footer (almost, because there is some content after it ..)

I don't really think that footer links are bad .. I read the latest article of seomoz, they say that but I don't really believe it .. I just follow big sites and do like them .. for instance, look at http://www.airliners.net/ , the partner sites links are in the footer ..

I don't think it can hurt PR and SERPS unless you get them from porn, casino and unrelated sites.

It will help but not as much as one with a close relevance IMO.

The link from the PR5 site should help your overall pagerank, but if it's content is not relevant to yours then it isn't going to help as much as a link from a higher PR site which also has content relevant to your site. Overall though it should benefit you.

You mean to say footer links are not counted by Google? Like links going to WordPress, Theme designers, PHPLD and other sponsors?

Having a PR5 means that website is reputable, yes, I think it will improve your ranking if you acquire a backlink from that site.

We should exchange back links related to our theme because search engine like theme related links.

The content should be related to your blog from where you are getting a backlink. Try to get backlinks from the sites which has same niche as yours...

The quality of a link depends on several factors, incl. the position of the link in the page.

A footer link may have no value at all if google found it is a traded link. That does not mean all footer links are traded links.
