Yes - I have to agree that this is one of the best things you can do. If you can find where your target audience is coming from you can concentrate on those areas.
Like others have said, find out where the traffic is coming from and focus on it! That way you're not wasting your time.

Just bumped into this thread... thanks for this tips.. actually all these tips are only for online marketing. Many people forget the importance of offline marketing. If your site or biz is catering service or product for local market, it is very important to do offline marketing to let people know about your site.

There's tons of (high-PR) websites out there that let you publish your press releases for free - just bear in mind that your PR actually needs to be at least half newsworthy (PR about the launch or a major improvement of a website/product/... usually is) or otherwise it won't get published.
