Hi. I want to be a professional web designer and want to design website according to standards. I already know basic Html. So i have downloaded a E-book Orielly's "Learning web design" .

Is that book good ? Its seems good for designing page layout and positioning elements which troubles me a lot.

I found that reading the css reference guide (pocket edition)
    helped put everything in perspective.

    # ISBN-10: 0596515057
    # ISBN-13: 978-0596515058

Also I believe that designers should have a good grasp of usability.
A good one for that is "Dont' make me think"

Some tips to be learn to become a professional web designer. Make sure your website complies to web standards at www.w3.org and make sure they are cross-browser compatible. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors.

Avoid using scripting languages on your site unless it is absolutely necessary. Use scripting languages to handle or manipulate data, not to create visual effects on your website. Heavy scripts will slow down the loading time of your site and even crash some browsers. Also, scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because of that.

Use CSS to style your page content because they save alot of work by styling all elements on your website in one go.

You should check out w3schools.com and then read design books. But remember that a good designer has to be creative. Just knowing how to use the tools are not enough. An employer will expect their designer to come up with creative design ideas. Good luck.

My main aim is to become a software developer in .NET Platform. I just want to learn web designing because i like it and can also earn through it by giving ads in daily newspapers and attracting customers.

My main motto is not only to earn. I love web designing and have a passion for both the jobs I.E. Developer and Web Designer.

    Can't i become both ?

Well of course. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk.
If you can handle .Net then web design should be a no brainer.
If you cannot learn or have a hard time learning web design then .Net most likely will not happen.

Now there is a big difference between knowing web design and being good at it. Some people are just better at design where others excel at problem solving and logic, which is what programming is.

If you're focusing on web standards, you can read this book:

However, besides web standards, there are some other important things to care about, for example gfx, usability.
    Keep on learning, good luck.
