    Critters,

This is the response from Adsense after viewing this thread and the images you put up for me about suggesstions to my site. What do you think?

Thank you for your email regarding your site
    http://www.ibringnothingtothetable.com/DP/forumImages/ideliverit_0.jpg.

I reviewed your screenshots, and the only problem that I could see would
be the placement of the laptop images above your ads.

In general, you are welcome to place images near the Google ads on your
site. However, some implementations are not permitted by our programme
policies, so we ask that you exercise some caution when choosing or
    placing the images.

To be specific, we ask that publishers do not place misleading images near
Google ads or use images that appear to be directly associated with the
advertisers and their offerings. Such images may draw undue attention to
the ads and prompt unintentional user clicks, thereby artificially
inflating advertiser costs. As you may know, drawing undue attention to
ads is in violation of our programme policies, so we are unable to approve
the placement of all images next to Google ads.

If you choose to experiment with placing images directly next to the ads,
I would strongly encourage you to maintain a visible border around the ad
units to reduce the possibility of confusing users.

For additional questions, we suggest you visit our AdSense Support site at

http://www.google.com/adsense_help . If you're unable to find an answer to
your question on our site, please feel free to reply to this email.

    Sincerely,

    Edel
    The Google AdSense Team

OK, you need to replace them with more generic computer images, but all else seems OK.

Alot of arcade sites add images next to adsense ads. The way those arcade sites do it really is tricking users because they think they're clicking on a game and this is probably why adsense discourages such practice.

I wonder if you have to have a visible border only if the ads and image(s) touch. Would you have to have a border around the ads if the images were 3 spaces above or below the ads, you think?

I have found this idea of Critters and implemented it. Looks great! Much better than ugly text adds alone. Except for the cases where there are less than 4 advertisements displayed. Also Lining up the images seems to be troublesome - at least for 720x60 large banner. The width of each advert will vary. But know after reading the whole thread I'm confused - is this allowed or not?

Should I move up the images little higher?

I have added additional 5px space between images and advertisement. Adding border is rather not an option, unless I centered the entire block.

I will, if I decide to keep it that way. It looks quite badly where there are 3 adverts in the banner.

There should be more graphics to implement with that.
Maybe you know some free resources for that ?

I was thinking about writing some script that would check how many adverts are in the banner and depending on that arranged pictures accordingly. But then it would be practically integration of those pictures with the adverisement.

    PS. Look what I found:
    http://www.all-usenet-archive.com/File.asp

It seems this became quite popular, but there... did they used Critter's original pictures? :D

I have contacted Google Addsense and sent them images of my site with and without images above the advertisement.

Here is the response I've got:

That's what I suspected, I think in over 90% of cases this will be considered as misleading and bringing undue attention. In those rare case it will work will be when images will be somehow more integrated with the site than with the ads. Critters' site was excellent example - site has lot of drawing and those pigs images were stronger integrated with site's content, besides it's hard to associate a drawing with the ad link. In case of pictures it comes more naturally - especially if you sell software or hardware - these images look like images of the products add links point to. That's misleading.

Conclusion: Forget it. Or instead of adsense use direct affiliate with some company for the page you want to use this technique on. If affiliate cooperation is based on CPA not CPC you can use any technique of drawing an attention you want.

Of course, it was clear what they were going to say about that specific design.

Set, according to your screenshots, you didn't add a visible border, or a separation line, or a different background color for ads and images in order to avoid user confusion. I'm surprised that also Critters forgot it in post #1096; probably Set's mistake comes from this.

Always, when those differentiation elements are missing, they say "no". When publishers do it correctly, with enough differentiation between ads and images, they say "ok".

I will experiment yet. Maybe I'll add a line or place one continuous image above the ads. This will solve problem of lining up images and will look qood with lesser number of ads than 4 (Though not as neat as 4 images - each to single ad).

Remember to let AdSense Support review your design first, and obtain an ok before going public. There must be a visible differentiation between ads and images.

Just remember, technically Google's current stance on this is you have to use a border on your ad unit or put a line/border between your ad and the image

I gave up idea idea of putting 4 separate images and placed one continuous image. This solves all visual problems for me, including possibly misleading image - individual advert matching issue.

Not sure, if this increase CTR but still looks better than bare ads.
