when you want to build SEO website all experts say focus on one way backlinks. So, there are many ways to generate one way backlinks such as.
submitting your site to web directories that offer free link or reqular links
( No paid ) there are a lot of these directories such as :

 

A directory only makes sense if it is popular, and most free directories are not that popular so in most of the time you enter your information in one of those directories you could write a good article or something which provides you way more traffic.

 

be away from directories right now , most of them required a reciprocal link that google may thought that they are backlink Exchanger

the best thing is to search for related blogs and start submitting your comments , search for the DO Follow blogs that will allow google spiders to follow your website link

also you can use bookmarking websites like digg , tiwtter etc , most of them gives backlinks to your website

 

There's a ton of directories out there that have a free listing. The best ones I could think of are the classified ads. Most of them will list your website for free, and you will get some nice SEO juice coming in. If you want to do this the fast way, I would recommend blackhat internet marketing. It's the best way to get FAST backlinks to your websites and the easiest. Why do it yourself when you can have software to do it for you. You would save alot of time via software.

 

Blog posting is the best way to get one way links, you just have to put in a little time into finding the right blogs (the do follow kind).

agreed directorys don't seem to give much value in the way of backlinks nowadays

better methods of generating one way backlinks are writing articles and submitting to ezinearticles, make a squidoo lens on your niche (same for hubpages and other web 2.o properties), blog commenting on related niche sites - nothing spammy though!

 

article is good also i think forum posting is better then blog commenting but thats me make sure they are theme and do follow

 

Getting free traffic is only possible if you have a ton of quality content and all your pages indexed by search engines. Most blogs now are nofollow, so do not waste your time on those. Spend more time on your own site and less on other people's sites.

DO everything(advertising, bookmarking, etc) yourself so that you won't have to pay anyone and it would be free for you !
And you will get free traffic and backlinks.

Directories are really good but you have to pay for the best to get one-way back links. Article submissions are quite ood as well as blog commenting but they are all hard work.

Well link exchange is almost worthless as well...
