Does the number of backlinks really affect the Google ranking of a website?

    Hi everybody,

My question is that whether the no. of baclinks really affect your website's Google page ranking i.e. is it better to have 100 of backlinks from 100 different low traffic websites or just 10/20 baclinks from 10/20 highly popular sites?

Can anyone please give an approximate idea about how many backlinks are required to get on 1st page of Google search?

Looking forward to your valuable opinions.

    Thanks

    - it is not that easy the way you think it to be
    - high pr links are always better, they will be even better if you get from similar niche
    - no hard rule which can say how many backlinks can get you in first page for a keyword.

I have found that one good link from an authority site can be better than 1,000 forum and blog comments and posts.
I would suggest go for quality instead of the masses.

Backlinks are not the only factor involved. On site SEO, clean site code that validates, good navigation, etc.. also help in the SERPs.

There is no one figure that will get you placement 1 on Google. You have to use a mixture of all the SEO techniques.

The most weight towards getting ranked (and most important, staying!) on the first page of Google for your keyword(s) is the domain age and quality of your website content in comparison to your competition.

What comes second is offline SEO, backlinks. Google prefers quality over quantity, so you would have more success to inject some 'status' into your site by one PR 10 backlink instead of five PR 1.

Quality over quantity, although if you can get both - you'll kill the competition, as long as your site is quality, too.

Yes, age and authority helps, too...

You are absolutely right. Quality content is something which should never be compromised.

    I dont think anyone will able to give exact idea how SERP and backlinks relates to each other. But there are some common norms in the market such as ;
-Links from high PR sites are better than low PR backlinks
-Links from authority sites are better
-Links from niche sites are better than unrelated sites
-Links from less outbound links pages are better

Backlinks is one of the factor to increase the site's pagerank. The more backlinks will help to rank your site high.As pagerank is determined by many factors, only backlinks will not help rank your site high.
