I have 5 blogs. All need a version update! Will it cause problems, delete posts, screw up my theme? I don't want to screw them up. I have never updated them from the version I started with so I don't know what will happen!

I would export the db files (Tools/Export) and download the template as well with ftp just to be sure, in case you need to re-install it.

Even though i dont need to do it this way, i still prefer to update mine the old way, by downloading the latest copy and making sure i delete the config file from the download and being selective when uploading to the content folder and making sure i have a backup first before doing any of that.

I strongly advise upgrading wordpress everytime theres a new one available and not waiting too long.

yep, always backup. There's a cool plugin available now that emails me a backup routinely now too. I like that!

I do it manually too, and I don't override the files either, I move the old ones out and the new ones in. The outage is brief but it's worth the disruption to know that it's done right.
