Selling Gastoll.com - PR2 Gas Price Web Site, 2 years old with some traffic/revenue

Synopsis

I bought this site on Sitepoint on October 17th 2007. When I bought it, it was a “real time” gas price web site. You entered your zip code and gas prices in your area were dynamically pulled and listed in a table below. Clicking on a gas station name launched a small Google Maps window within the site, and the gas station you chose was mapped for you.

Moving on………the previous owner said the gas prices were taken from a free public source, which turned out to be MSN Autos and *not* free. I was contacted by the company who supplies the gas price data to MSN - OPIS - and asked to stop pulling data via MSN’s public RSS feed. Not wanting to hassle with it I removed the data feed. In its place I added the automotive.com gas price widget that you see now.

This site would be good for someone who already has a reliable gas price data feed that they can use. It is very simple to change the data source in the site code. I know of several people who purchased legal access to gas price feeds for around $100, though I cannot verify that they are in fact “legal” feeds. If you don’t have a gas price feed, you could leave it as-is; the automotive.com widget is still decent.

Site Promotion

Shortly after I bought the site I spent a small amount of money on AdWords to drive traffic to the site. Visitor loyalty was good, many people returned multiple times and the site started building up a steady visitor base. However, once I removed the gas price data feed I halted the AdWords campaign, thus the traffic fell off quite a bit. I also did some SEO on the site right after I bought it, your basic keyword-rich content with Title, Description and Keyword meta tags to match. The site still pulls in organic traffic to this day, though traffic has dwindled to almost nothing.

Traffic Details

Majority of the traffic these days comes from organic search, mainly Google. See attached screenshots for high level traffic stats.

I have a very demanding fill time corporate job, as well and tons of other web sites that I run. I am spread very thin amongst all these things, and have decided to unload several of the web sites that I don’t really have time for or have an interest in.

Transfer of ownership

The domain is registered with GoDaddy.com, and I will take care of the transfer. To transfer the domain name, you simply need to create an account with GoDaddy (if you don't have one already) and I will transfer it to your account. I believe the transfer (change of owner) is free. Or we can transfer it to whatever registrar you want.

The site is currently hosted on my web server. It is a very basic site, no back-end (database) or anything like that. It consists of a handful of PHP and HTML files, a few images, and a script or two. I am happy to transfer/install all necessary HTML and web site files to your server if you’d like. I want the buyer to be up and running as quick as possible and happy with their purchase. I will make the transfer very quick and painless for the new owner, rest assured. If you’d prefer to leave it hosted on my server you can do that as well for a small monthly fee. There is no urgency to decide, it can stay on my server until you’ve decided what you want to do.

Sorry guys my entire server is having a problem, site will be down for a few hours. Downtime is rare for this site, but as luck would have it now is when the server chooses to have problems.

 

Site is back up. Apache died on my server and an upgrade had to be done. Everything is good now.
