How to start my own directory site !!!

A directory can make you a lot of money if you are good at marketing/promotion. I would use phplinkdirectory, a php based link directory will be stable and easy to manage. You should offer listings for free at first, to build up a user base.

Right from the beginning, LINK BUILD your directory's domain!! It is easy to get to PR3 with basic link building, but PR4 or higher will make your directory very valuable. You can then start selling featured/premium links, maybe displayed on homepage. I bet you could sell premium links on a PR4 or higher directory for MINIMUM $50/yr.

If you directory starts to get heavy traffic, you will definitely need a VPS. At first, you will be fine with a standard hosting plan. Be careful, if you go get one of those dirt cheap hosts, the site will struggle with slowness and database errors. I would suggest InMotion Hosting or HostGator. Both are very reliable with great customer service.

You must be very new to this industry.. The more traffic your site gets, the more bandwidth, MySQL queries, and general strain on the servers and databases. Read the terms of service for a basic web hosting account. ($40-$130/yr) If your website starts to get a very heavy amount of traffic, the web host will most likely suspend you account. If they don't, expect to see many Database connection errors, and extremely slow load speeds.

Maybe what you should have said was "Get a half decent hosting account that offers what it promises. Ask around." A web host that suspends your account because you've got high traffic is useless. Unless of course you've gone over your bandwidth limit- but in that situation a good host will usually give you the chance to upgrade.

Mind you, if you're paying only $40 a year ($3.33/mth) as you mentioned, IMO you can expect a crap service. You get what you pay for.

Lets see who is new here.

Let say he start getting 10,000 visits per day.
Average page has 50Kb so, we will have total of 500,000Kb or 50MB per day, by 30 days will make it 1,500MB or 1.5GB per month. Even if visitors stay for more than 3 pages it will come to , lets say 5GB per month or in other words any 99cents web hosting will give him all he need.

But... he will never have 10,000 visits and he will drop his directory after 3 month and only 10 non-spam submissions.

I am thinking that there is money from directories... If you could never get money from that then what's the use of that directories sites.

You can make good money from any business! Time, research, hardwork & investment will give you a good chance of making money... eventually...

That is ridiculous! If they didn't agree with your comment they could have the balls to say so - either publicly or privately, or perhaps put it as the infraction reason if this forum is run on an "agree with the mods or get penalised" basis.

I see they did delete those other posts though. Good work to the mod that did that. They get away with too much - I hope they checked *all* their posts, but that might be a bit optimistic.

 

i'm not sure whether directories really earn much as we all know we want free links and etc

phplinkdirectory is no. 1
for hosting choose hosting that located on your targeted country or try hosting that support phpLD eg. Host Gator and Downtown Host, choose the reasonable price one.

 

I would care less if the just deleted my post but infracting post that has more than 20 characters and made complete sentence for “Running Up Post Count”…gimme a break.

This Forum will be 80% shorter if Mods start doing their job and start going after real spammers and not after people who are taking their time and doing their best to made real contributions.

Do I look to you like somebody who cares about Post Count?

Yeah, no 1 as in, no one that uses it is very serious about starting a directory.

If you host doesn't support phpLD, get a new host, because your hosting company will be living in the 20th century. It doesn't take much to run phpld... like PHP, MySQL... erm.. anything else I'm missing?
