IMHO, sites such as Digg, Technorati, Propeller, Squidoo, HubPages and Qassia are a really big help with getting backlinks to your site. Digg seems to be dropping some lately, but is still being picked up by the SERPS.

Posting your articles to article directories still works as will press releases.

The thing that works the best though, is making sure your site has enough unique and well written content to make the search engines and visitors want to actually visit your sites.

Half-ass written articles won't cut it any more. When people are looking for information to solve a problem they are having, they want to find the solutions to their problems. What they don't want to find is the exact same information that they have found on the other 9 listings of the first page of the search engines.

Facebook is the best social network for SEO. You can also use Yahoo Answers for SEO.

Hi, social networking sites are very helpful in SEO. There are so many sites are there like blogcatalog, mybloglog, digg, stumbleupon, facebook, twitter and many. I must say, promote your business in these sites and you will get lost of traffic.

    Yep Qassis is now Qondio.

Hubpages sucks, you have to keep changing your content over and over to keep the links dofollow, its not worth it, I deleted fifty hubs added them to ezinearticles and buzzle and now have a hundred decent backlinks

You are so right. I forgot that Qassia had changed to Qondio. Duh! My bad.

As far as the nofollow with HubPages, it really doesn't matter that much, IMHO, as long as you have good keywords. That is a good idea, though about removing them and using the info in places that are better suited for backlinks.

I did the same with some of my Squidoo lens that where no longer in line with the new Squidoo rulings. I have always favored Squidoo over HubPages, but it is still a good place for newbies to get their feet wet and get some basic training.

I haven't had any dealings with HubPages myself in over a year, as I've been too busy with other things to keep up, so I think I'll take your advice and remove some of the spokes in the hub. Funny thing - I just had a 'friend request" email from there today. LOL.

it doesn't matter if they're no follow - the fact is, those links are getting people (traffic) to your site, which is boosting your rankings (SEO). Facebook & YouTube are best for SEO, then Twitter just due to sheer volume of links that can go out in a short period of time.

Best thing you can do is create profiles on sites like twitter, facebook and SU and make those profile active then your backlink to your site will be stronger.
