Magento is great. I run it for tangible goods, but it also has the option for downloadable products.

I looked into magento for downloadable products and it seems it really wasn't made for them. I went with zen cart

For files I use e-junkie.com. They are really good, automatic download, easy to setup, etc. They do have a monthly fee though. I think it is worth it though.

I can second the suggestion of e-junkie.com, as it's easy to use and works. The only thing I don't like is its name, as it is an attempt to be cute about addiction. You may also want to look at the following:

For free ones try OSCommerce or ZenCart they're both open source and free installs. On most webhosts w/cPanel you can even do a Fantastico 1-click install. You can get good themes on Template Monster too for around $50 or Google OSCommerce Templates for some free ones.

    The Download is Here:

    And Here For Zen Cart

Do you plan to sell a single e-book or multiple e-books? Some cart solutions may be more appropriate for the first case and some for the second.

There are various options available. OsCommerce, Zen Cart, and Magento etc.

But my personal choice is OsCommerce. It gives you option to upload downloadable products like ebook/softwares etc. and it is very easy to maintain.

Magento is little tricky. ZenCart is almost similar to OsCommerce.

    Although, the choice is yours.

I use zen cart and love it. It has downloadable product support like you are looking for, but it, like some other carts has a fairly steep learning curve. Paypal support is also an easy setup. But its free and the support is pretty good. But if its just for a couple of products and want to integrate into an existing site, there are better options from what I hear.

Also there are some sites that do everything for you, you just list the product(its limited to just downloaded products)

I think you are better off with Zen Cart. It is still in development (and they release patches when required) and the support forum is full of experts who are committed to helping others.

As far as I know OsCommerce code hasn't been updated in a number of years.
