No, I have Photoshop and GIMP ( http://gimp.org ) and I never use Photoshop. BTW GIMP is free and has more features than Photoshop. I wrote a post about it : http://milazzoblog.co.cc/node/7 . Also, if you are using a Mac, upgrade X11 to version 3.4.0 and go to preferences and enable click through windows. Use GIMP, not Photoshop

If you're working in the print industry, PS outshines The GIMP. For web development, GIMP is everything PS is, and more. It is developed from the ground up for web graphics. As an added bonus, it is ported to Windows, Mac, and Linux; no worries about moving from Windows to a more productive environment.

    cheers,

Photoshop is alright for optimizing images for the web. I use it because it outputs better quality pictures at a lower filesize than my main image editor, Fireworks 8.

Beyond that I have real no use for it except for maybe a bit of brush or text work. It is a common misconception that photoshop must be used in web design, however this is so far from the truth it is unreal - especially if you are just starting out.

Instead of spending time creating a mockup in Photoshop, sketch your idea's on a piece of paper and once you have the layout you want, break it down into single elements. Then learn to code these elements seperately. You can always re-use the element again without excess images/markup.

If you write the markup and CSS cleanly enough (coding each element seperately) then you're elements are not barricaded. Photoshop barricades a design.

    For example;
If, once you have coded your Photoshop mockup you find that you dont like a particular segment, you must open PS, edit your stuff, export it, edit css (and maybe html) before your changes take effect. If you take my advice and code each element seperately, you are granting yourself the freedom to edit these using only CSS which saves you plenty of time in the long run.

Learn properly from the start and save yourself the time and effort.

Photoshop is capable of producing photo quality images from scratch. I can't find any evidence of the Gimp being able to do the same. Google is a verb. Photoshop is a verb. Case closed. :)

Maybe I should make a poll to decide whether Photoshop or Gimp is better because I see different opinions from you guys. I should also just research these two programs to see their advantages and disadvantages. Thanks anyways for telling me the two programs I should be going with.

Both are excellent programs but some of the effects on photoshop are out of this world.

I love photoshop. I used to use gimp, but gimp lacks a lot of things out of the box that photoshop has. Plus I experienced A LOT of bugginess in gimp, which caused me to lose entire sites several times. I'd get photoshop from Journey Ed

i think photoshop is good for editing image. but it is not good for website.

if you want to make website you can use Dreamweaver and for image editor you can use Photoshop.

OK, I see now the majority of posts seem to go toward Photoshop so I will assume that is the best. Also, I did notice through my research that Photoshop is primarily taught in most Web Design schools and colleges.

No, you can only assume that more people use it. Consider the substance of the remarks, too.

Neither is 'best'. Photoshop has features that give it a boost in one area or another, while GIMP is ahead in other areas. One place GIMP totally kicks PS's rear end is cost. Either app will do all you need for web development, but since you're not settled into one yet, why not download GIMP and go to work? Join a support forum to help you along as needed. All for zero dollars.

Adobe goes to great lengths to make it easy for schools to afford their products. Students trained on PS will be buyers of PS.

Don't worry about having GIMP skills in a PS world. If my graphics associate is any measure, transferring one app's skill set to the other is trivial. It only took her a couple of minutes the first time she opened GIMP to figure out the interface, import her PS images, and do all she needed to do.

    cheers,

    gary
