There are so many small businesses that are reliant on eBay. I just can't see them shutting down anytime soon. eBay has gotten ridiculous on their fees though.

I think its about hit its growth period, it is now leveling out. I am bummed about some changes they have done and don't use it that much anymore. I got burned twice our of my money and product from paypal (ebay owned).

eBay may turn out like Yahoo -- having been big once, then simply being "there" for a long time afterwards with diminished power. Nothing lasts forever, but even if they fall from being the biggest power they will certainly be hanging around for a long time before actually shutting down.

I don't know where you heard this, but eBay is not going anywhere anytime soon. Their online auction business model has proven to be effective, and while they have had some minor competition from wannabe online auction sites, no one is coming even close to catching them - Amazon is probably their biggest competitor, but both companies are very strong.

The problem with eBay is their ever-escalating fees. Eventually, if they don't quit doing that, people will slowly but surely slip to other sites. It will definitely take a long time, but no website reigns forever when it is that great of a lead.

eBay will never die. They would just come out with another big feature like they did with eBay Motors.

I think we can all agree Ebay is on the downward cycle. It had 3 CEOs in the last 2 years, outsourced customer service overseas and is plagued with problems. The current CEO is detached from the web world and in my modest opinion should not last very long. The Skype purchase alone is going to cost them as it will be sold for a small fraction of what it was purchased for. I would give it 3-5 years before an able competitor takes their market share away.

Still, 3-5 years is a long time. Especially on the Internet. You have to take into consideration that eBay is a brand. When somebody thinks "buy stuff online" they immediately think eBay. This is something that cannot die very easily.
