People don't like to be bombarded with ads. Plus it's a little tougher to tell what an ad is if you blend it in well with your content.

I don't tkink that number of ads is important. It is more important to blend ads into your website. If ads are blended well into your website than it is better to have more ads.

I use AdSense only in the body of articles in middle of them and before last paragraph (both large rectangle, border/backgroundless, title color like links on whole site) and articles are long and worth reading. So on first screen user have no idea there will be any ads, and after reading half he is surprised :) I used many configurations - the worse choice was palcing ads in sidebars and on top of site.

So av in last 7 days:
ad in middle of article - CTR: 4,11%
ad in bottom - CTR: 1,62%

If a visitor has interest in the ad, he/she will click the ad even if he/she knows it is an ad...

You are absolutely right. It is real, simple and unique answer. We (people) click ads because we are interested them. That's all.

If I go to a site and it looks like a big crapfest full of ads all over the place, I just hit the back button immediately.

    - Avoid bomabrding people with ads
    - Blend them and keep them subtle
    - As mentioned above, incorporate them into your content, e.g. at the start of a post just after the heading title and the article body
    - Are the ads that are showing up relevant? If not, then you need to look at your site structure, content and analyse to see if there is any advertiser compeition for the targetted keywords.
    - Ensure you have good quality content, ideally over 250 words.

Thats just a quick basic overview.

They probably don't know it's ads because of how little and how well blended into the site they are.

Is this accepted by Adsense T & C? If people are don't realise the difference, then will not they ban your site?

Ads should be blended with the content and graphics and also if you reduce the number of ads not the size you willsurely earn more income

Like you Google wants to make as much money as possible. When people use a search engine what do they do? They click on the top ads right?

So Google feeds the best performing ads at the top. The #1 ad might not pay the highest amount, but it pays the best overall based on number of clicks, cost per click, and performance for the advertiser. These ads make the most money for Google.

So lets say you put up 3 ad blocks. And you have 12 ads for people too choose from. The lower performing ads are now also being displayed on your page with the higher performing ads. So you lower your chances of making more money.

There is no magic number of ads to display ... many options. But more is not necessarily better.

It's way more complicated than that and the formula is not public. And the quality of your site and how Google views the quality of the traffic you send are big factors.

Suffice it to say that all other things being equal you will probably earn more with fewer ads.

Consider also that if you have ads at the bottom of your page and someone comes to your page and then just leaves and never sees them those impressions count against your click rate.

Adsense is a lot of ART and a little Science. So you have to test for yourself.
