Started a Geo Target Experiment

    Guys ,

im not an expert on Ad placement but with no real success in the past with adsense , i decided to test a Geo Target idea.

On the right on my homepage ( or any page a user hits on my site ..) , I show a map and "welcome from LOCATION "...

    Site is www.goalpost.tv
This is using geo targetting and is generally very accurate and so when a visitor sees their map and location mentioned , it draws them to that point.

And with that .. my adsense has gone from ( well i havent had success in the past ) essentially zero to $15 a day ( average ) on one placement.

Ive read about images drawing a visitors attention and so thought about this concept.....

    Any thoughts/feedback

    Cheers!

It's an interesting idea. My eyes were immediately drawn to the name of my city, and then there was nothing right around it but ads and a map. The map wasn't terribly interesting, so the ads were the next thing I saw.

Lol im sure your city is interesting :) Sometimes the maps arent 100% ( based on IP..

But thats the theory... it draws the visitor down there..

    thanks for feedback

did google reply yet? It seems as though it would be a legitimate idea but google can be funny.

Any update on the earnings? Still strong or have they diminished. I guess thiss experiment shows predominately that you need to draw the eyes towards the ads. It has got me thinking :)

    Hey guys..
You might find this funny but my goal was to keep visitors on site rather then taking them away via Google Ads.
I think i had peaked when i wrote this post.. :)

However anyone got any questions or anything i can help with , glad to.

The idea itself is good, since google shows geographically targeted ads so both EPC and CTR should increase.
However, a feedback from myself, being from Egypt I see ads in Thai (in the contact page) so my bet is your are using some not-very-accurate IP database. Have you tried IP2L one?

The site is impressive though! and I have to admit that I work in your site niche so you got me very interested :)

    Cheers,
    Hossam

Geo targeting in that fashion is always good in my opinion, however with a not so accurate IP database sometimes it can produce negative results...
Try to find a better IP database and that will increase the accuracy of the geo targeting and increase your audiences bounce rate.

    Hi Hossam ,
thanks for looking :) The Google Ads shown on contact page are not mine , they are part of plugin for VisitorContact , a contact plugin I use.. They sneakily decided to add Google Ads to the form one day.. but I do like the form etc...

Im using a paid subscrption to maxmind. You get something like 50K lookups for $20..

Working on a different Geo project now ( related to site ) and so have stopped for now.. But if accurate , draws users.

If your in same niche and want to discuss and collaboration , PM me :)

    Cheers!

My target market is UK at the moment , with lots of visitors from elsewhere. The "litmus" was to enable the Geo Code and then have UK visitors hit it. I surveyed over 20 ( not a major number.. but satisfied me!) and each reported that the Geo Target was their correct city.

So work in progress for something more..... ;)
