Your PC is definitely not a problem but the dynamic IP can be a bit of a hassle. Also it depends on the TOS of your ISP. There are a huge number of free or cheap web hosting around. Really do not need to do this.

Why are you installing Windows XP?

If you wish to do experience in server management then install Windows Server versions like Windows Server 2003 OR windows server 2008.

    Hi,

    1. Install and configure MySql
    2. Install and configure PHP (PHP little bit tricky to installing at windows)
    3. Install and configure Vbulletin. (But if you didn't purchase Vbulletin use phpBB.)
    - phpBB is free forum application.
    4. Test in your local LAN your access your server.
    5. Register to DynDNS or NO-IP Dynamic DNS Provider and download client software.
    6. If you have router you need setup forwarding to your server.(Open port:80 or 8080 depending which port you setup in Apache)
    7. Install and configure Dynamic DNS software to server (note if you have router maybe you can setup there)
    8. You need test from internet to access your server.

    Hi,

I don't have personal experience with Ubuntu distros, I'm everywhere using Debian distro. But my opinion is if you want use machine just for server function then install Ubuntu Server Edition.

if you are not familiar with linux, you could use windows.
for windows, my recommendation is to use IIS instead of apache.
but if you still wanna use a linux distro, i recommend Free/OpenBSD.

For your studies, i can raccomend you to use Virtual Server System.
So you can compare Windows, Linux and Unix Systems..
In windows server 2008 use IIS7 and find it the documents PDF in emule or torrent tracker.. here link PDF of eBook Oreilly

After this, install FreeBSD and configure Nginx as web server, is better for more access. (LEMP Server)

in Linux, you can install CentOS or Debian and configure LAMP server.

For other question i can help you in Sys Admin.
After learn and compare many system, you can create you own configuration for your own project and so test full source..

www.howtoforge.com is a perfect resource for you. Look for their perfect server setups. They really go into all of the detail to setup a fully working dedicated server box. Without all of the Dynamic IP stuff though. That is easy to configure though and not really very much on the server you have to configure for it. Minus the script to update the Dynamic DNS entry when your machine changes IP addresses.

I use Ubuntu server edition for all of my production servers. The help and support of the community is great.

Also, I'll second the www.howtoforge.com recommendation; for just about anything you want to do with a server, beginner or advanced, Falko or one of the users has supplied an in-depth tutorial, step by step to help you get going. They cover multiple distros and a slew of applications.
