Getting others to link to you (while including the keywords you're optimizing for in the link text) without asking for the link, of course.

Yeah, but that's pretty difficult if not impossible unless you're already a famous blog/website. I mean, many websites I help, occasionally gets links for free, but it's not significant enough to say it happens all the time.

great post! I do feel that some of those things do work though. But they work the hard way. Writing quality articles and dropping them on quality sites. But good remarks!

Most sites run by non-SEO people link to other sites with similar content, content that they feel applies to what they are writing about. Google knows this and can use this fact to further determine the quality of your site. Also, not everyone talking about the same subject is necessarily your competition.

    Amen!

In short, your links have to be as natural and organic as possible. This is what will make you win.

    There are not quick fixes!

agree with you about "point 7" i think submitting to link directories...other than the main ones is sort of waste of time.. the main one i submit are (google, yahoo, ask, bing(live), dmoz)

    How to do this.
What if the blog owner doesn't accepts the link but only post. Then it will be a wastage of time.

They should. If they don't accept, then copy and paste the article somewhere else, and hope that google punishes the previous guys. :p Or try to delete the article.

Ask them to give you permissions to post, don't just send them an article via email , because then they can claim it as their own.

For example, in Inferno Development, as soon as you log in, you can write your own article and submit it, and even edit it continuously as you wait for moderator to approve, and they don't delete links (do-follow).

Thank you for the nice comments, I'm glad my experience is helping people. I'd hoped more people would write their real experiences ( I guess maybe some of them hide their experience to only keep it for themselves?)----- Also thanks for the +reps.
