    At Sedo,

    Server.com is sold for $770,000....
What do you think of this deal?
Spending $770,000 is worth for a domain?
what does the guy who brought it will do with this domain?
Who really benefited from this deal and how?

The Buyer probably had something in his mind that's why he spent this much for just the domain. And the domain as far as i think will surely do good for him. Its worth it according to me.

    worth it!
It's perfect for a hosting company
and 770,000$ isn't that much compared to some other domain sales.

Interesting.. Nice to see domain sales prices on the rise again.. Especially when you look at the most notable sold by SEDO recently:

    iverified.com 5,500 $US
    yourecycle.com 4,750 $US
    rise.net 1,550 $US
    chaussure-sport.org 1,333 EUR
    jouets.be 1,200 EUR
    marketmeter.com 1,105 £
    epsychology.us 1,000 EUR

These are some really unappealing names IMO. Amazing...

It sure is a premium domain, the new owner must have something in mind.

Nice domain, especially for a company that deals in either server software (IE: Microsoft, Sun etc) and/or hardware (IE: Dell, HP, Sun etc)
The high profile companies that would have been interested in that domain, were able to afford to push the price to 770.Me on the other hand, wouldn't have paid more than what I could afford. (nil :))

    Cheers

No domain name is worth anywhere near that much. Any business that pays that much is making a terrible decision.

Look at some of the top websites right now - Twitter.com, Google.com, digitalpoint.com...
Any of them could have used any other domain name and been as successful.

It's a big key word in Internet marketing. Anyone can start a big web hosting company with this domain.

    Good luck

Will the domain server.com earn them their money back if they have crappy service?

What if they had server.im or server.net or server.org or server.cc or server.tv....

They didn't need to spend $800k on a domain name. There are alternatives. The money could have been spent on marketing to build a brand name and they would probably have had more success. In fact, there are so many better ways to spend that much money.

Are you at digitalpoint.com right now because that was the first term you thought of when you wanted to find a place to discuss websites? Or are you here because they built up a good forum with all the right topics and they did well in a search?

Today, that vast majority of people go to a search engine (Google) to find what you want. They don't just type in a domain name and add .com.

Is depends on what they have to offer...

As you said the Twitter, Google and DP are not so good domains, but when you see what they have done because of thier skills not the domain they have....

Lets see what builts on Server.com

Do you think, a new company is coming or a existing company coming up with this domain?

Who's to say they don't already own some of the other TLD's?

Yep, they could spend 800K on building up a brand name that may or may not take off, or they could spend 800k on a brand that is already a household name.
Which is exactly what they have done.

I am not sure you are aware of the work/cost/time involved in building a successful brand name from scratch.

Why would you spend all that work time and money trying to build a non dictionary word domain into a brand that is associated with an existing dictionary word, when you can just buy the existing dictionary word domain?
How much easier would it be to brand "Server.com" than to try and brand "servoogle.com"?

Do a search on Google for the term "server" See all the sponsored links? How much money is already being spent by companies competing for that "brand name"?
How much would these companies be willing to pay to advertise on server.com?

The owners will make that money back in no time.
    Do the math.

    Cheers
    James

I think the offer is too high. He could use a XXXXhost.com such like domain for his business.
