Why spammers try submitting to directories knowing their links will not get approved?

    Fellow DP members,

I would like your opinion on this matter. Many submit junk sites to directories; stuffing keywords in title and description/ parked page/ sites with broken links/ sites with little to no content etc. WHY do they do this knowing well that a good directory will never approve of their submission...

Spammers just dont care, everyday in this forum and others people want an automatic way of doing things, endless threads show how lazy people are, if they do submit spam manually its partly ignorance and as already mentioned they will get through and auto accepted on some directories.

You answer your own question. The good ones don't approve them. The bad ones do and frankly the majority of the free ones are not that good - they will just mass approve everything. Why should those owners care when they can toss up directories by the thousands with free scripts?

That's because spammers don't loose anything from submitting to your directory, they are doing it automatically anyway. What matters is that they can get through many directories because of automated approval or mass approval process. Overall spamming is still profitable for them.

They most likely used autmoated software that can submit to thousands of directories in a few hours.

This is actually the biggest hole in the free directory model. People don't spam the hell outta directories that charge them per submission... but will send a deeplink of every page they have to multiple categories each if there's no charge.

They do so in hopes that on the receiving end there's either:
    1) auto-accept software or else
    2) a really lazy click-thru-editor that's more interested in number of sites accepted than quality

The result is that one or two guys with a software program can create a massive cleanup of directory queues... which also buries the decent submissions to the same categories in a pile of rubbish (thereby slowing approval time for even the cleanest and most deserving site submissions).

If it NEVER worked they might stop, but the hope that it'll succeed still exists. Even when it becomes entirely useless it'll take a while for that message to make it down the pipeline. If there were a way to implement the death penalty for spammers I'd have used it a lotta times by now.

    ONE POTENTIAL DEFENSE
Adding CAPTCHA isn't a perfect fix, but it will at least slow down the damage they wreak. Sites that allow easy machine submission are going to get spammed out the wazoo by even the cheapest auto-submit software

The spammers may be hoping that the directory owner will click on the spam links.

So are you suggesting that those submissions are ALWAYS software generated and are not manual submissions!?

because spammers are using automated software... bots don't care as long as they submitted it...
