Semi Automated Directory submission is the best way to save your precious time. its like any human activity. You just need to add the information once in their database and they will take care of rest of the things except filling the captcha.
These kind of tools automatically picks the categories based on the keywords you provided at the time of adding the information. You can submit your site to 1000 directories within 3-4 hours and if we talk about totally manual submissions, It will take at least 2-3 days (i assume you work 8-9 hours a day) to complete 1000 submissions.

Good answer. Also, semi-automatic submitters make an attempt at picking categories for you but let you choose and alternative if you think there's a better one.

In some ways, such directory submitter tools would be better termed semi-manual to avoid being tainted with the automatic/ spamming tag.

    i use webceo
    Good Thing:
    - Preference and list to do manual or automatic submission (you got a lot of directory).
    - Analyze and report nicely (if you have client)
    - Scheduler

    Not Good Thing:
    - It's not one time investment, you must made recurrance payment almost for everything. The free version only for beginners.
    - They need to improve their Keyword Analysis feature to give better result
    - No Forum

Only manual submission is completely under your control.

I found that semi-automated submission is the best way to get around it. If it is fully automated you don't have control and if it is manual it becomes too tedious after awhile.

manual is better but some swear by automatic ones saves the time I guess. But most auto submitters have a fail rate higher then manual and could come cross overly spammy when posting.

No one can deny the fact that manual submission is the only safest, accurate and right way to do directory submission. Many people dont see subtle changes in the Directories sites that makes these software's commit blunders. Either you are submitting for your own site or you need someone else to submit your site, just see to it that its manual. You will find the difference once you have done manual directory submission. There is no option of making bulk mistakes with some bots, if you really care about the results.
