Why are domain buyers so rediculously unrealistic when it comes to value ?

I have been trying to figure this out now for a couple of years.
Why are supposedly "seasoned" domain buyers so insulting when they are just down right stupid in what they are looking for, compared to the price they want to pay ?

On other domain forums, it is common for someone to want a high value, or popular niche domain for $xx. For Instance, a similar add on a domain wanted section elsewhere:

My budget is $xxx paid via Paypal asap!
I need a ONE word dictionary .com that's brandable.
Think marketing, seo, support, social media, advertising etc.
My budget is $xxx paid via Paypal asap!
    Thanks!

Maybe I'm the stupid one, but when was the last time you saw anything remotely close to those specifications for a few hundred dollars ? Everyone wants that !

It's not the ignorance of the "buyers" who are basically looking for gem that they can rip someone off for, it's the arrogance that they have about looking to steal a gem from someone.

Sure, on any given day, there will be someone with a nice gem that needs the money and you can get lucky...but those have always been very rare as most people with valuable domains are not the idiots that "buyers" make them out to be.

I went back and forth with a supposed buyer just recently, with domains in his price range...of course none of them were good enough because he was looking for something brandable like "Bing.com" with a budget of $300. So he asked if I had anything else, and I sent him some others that I would never let go to anyone no matter what for under $5k and he got offended as if I should sell those to him for his measly $300.

    What is wrong with people?

So why are there so many people posting unrealistically ?
Are they new and stupid and just don't know that they are out of their league ?
Are they hoping to get lucky ?
Are they from countries where a few hundred dollars is a lot of money ?

    I don't get it.

    It works both ways.

Sellers can be completely out of sync with their asking prices too. I've had people trying to sell me domain names for $xxx because 'with a bit of promotion' it 'could' be a great name. No doubt, these sellers are probably the same buyers trying to buy one word dictionary for $xx :D

Of course, one mans treasure is another mans crap. Its true we all tend to overvalue what we own and undervalue when attempting to buy.

I am a domain seller for the past 2 years.I have come across many such people who tries to grab the domain from me for a very low price.I get irritated when they keep on contacting me for the domain for the same low price...

I too agree that some buyers behave stupid thinking that the sellers are stupid...

    andeepdude, :)
great post here ..... if your were personally building a site for own business would you use a domain that centers around traffic or niche....... plus is it true that one or two dashes work better for type in traffic then just a keyword domain?????
this thread is very good here ................... targeting domian that work well for traffic is int that what matters andeepdude

I hate to say it, but it's not just the Buyers that are unrealistic in their pricing. I've approached a number of Owners, one especially, that stated they wanted $100k+ offers for their "bastardized" single word.

Having said that, there has to be a starting point somewhere in the negotiations, and more often than not that initial price will be lower than expected/desired/deserved, etc.

    Cheers, D.

    There is nothing wrong.
This is purely a give and take world.
If you don't feel comfortable with the offered price, then you can keep your domain by not selling to him.
Some more,it will not cause you any harm if you not sell the domain to him.
And at the same time, you can wait for the people to offer you a much higher price for your domain.

You'll find many people (both buyers and sellers) who sport inflated ideas of themselves and think everyone else is trash; typically, these are also the guys who buy into the "make millions in return for 10 bux" kind of scams.

After losing my patience a couple of times, I learnt the best way is to ignore them. If I'm selling, I quote my expectation upfront and don't bother with responses that don't conform. If I'm buying, similar rules apply.

There are times when I participate in an existing sales / purchase thread; but only if I'm comfortable with the terms.

As a seller, we will want to sell our product at the highest price it would be. so, as long as buyer can accept it, it a reasonable price.

    Reasonable not mean cheapest.

Its such a personal emotive choice (buying).
I have seen some trashy domains sell for xxxx-xxxxx
when quality aged & memorable ones sell for xx-xxx.

There is no real exact science, just the forces of market demand
in action coming together for a sale.

    what is guaranteed though-
Market Perception changes with time and good domains increase in value
by default, depends how long you want to hold onto them and not
really what others offer in the mean time.... until you are ready to let go.

Sadly, a domain name is only worth what someone is willing to pay for. :)

And sadly Dp isnt the right forums for seller but a great one for buyers , i myself have some good domains here for about $10-$20 and sold it else where for $40-100 , If you are looking for serious domainers and END users possibly head to Np and DNf

and not just domain but most of the things are like that in DP

That's right, if you're looking for a good price to sell your domain name for, DP is not the place to find it because you'll only get really insulting offers. ;)

domains are generally good for people looking for a unique name .. however webmasters urge clients to buy outside the given name ...... honestly no one stays relevant any more in the root ...
